My daughter has played varsity soccer (team won NYC championship) and ran track since Freshman year. She is considering adding Outdoor varsity track this spring. She most likely will not be recruited for either sport, so is it worth adding a third varsity sport (as a junior)? She has lots of volunteer work already, so the extra time would probably be focused on prepping for SAT and AP exams. Not sure how admissions counselors view multiple varsity sports if the child is competitive but not “world class”?
Admissions tend to be impressed by varsity sports participation. I think the best answer I can give, though, is for her to make the decision solely based on what she wants to do. It seems she has great ECs for college, which is certainly a thing. AND high school is not just pre-college. It’s a crucial time when young people naturally learn about themselves–who they are, what they enjoy, who makes them their best selves. So just doing things because it’s fun, or might be interesting or challenging or a way to meet people, is fine too. And it’s great for kids to practice weighing pros and cons and figuring out what works well for them. They will be doing a lot of this in college, and after. This process is probably more important that the thing decided. Good luck!
