vasity basketball

i was reading a lot of CCers' profiles and i find that there were few basketball players. Would basketball make me stand out if i have good enough grades? it seems that everyone's into football and swimming lol. I'm not on the recruit level but i'm thinking of sending a mixtape to the coach (not admission supplement) Do you think it'll make a difference?

If you are not recruited, I don’t know how it will be viewed. It’s because there are some schools (huge public magnets) where it’s really hard to make varsity basketball, and in some, it’s really easy…so if you are not recruited, I would say that it’s better than just JV, but it’s probably going to be viewed on the same level as being a top member of a school club (or something to that extent).

If you are not a VERY good athlete, then BB will not help you at all with admissions beyond just showing the commitment and responsibility that any time consuming EC requires. Some varsity BB players who are not recruited in high school are able to get a spot at the Division III or NAIA level, but you would probably have to be the top guy on your HS team in a decent league in order to be competitive there as well. Coaches do not want highlight tapes. They are looking at more things than you think they are, such as how you react when you get put on the bench, how you move without the ball, etc. You have nothing to lose by contacting the coach at a particular college, but understand that if you have nothing to offer him (i.e. a valuable body on the court) then he will not be helping you with admissions at all. Here is a thought: some colleges look for male BB players to work out/practice with their women’s team. Try contacting those coaches and see if they are looking for athletes like you. Or, try becoming a volunteer student-manager for men’s BB- the coach can sometimes help you with admissions if they want you as a manager. Good luck.

this is my problem, i didn’t grow in terms of weight until this year, my junior year, my first year on the team. And in this last few weeks, my athleticism increased greatly (i can actually dunk now). But i did not have great stats over the season nor was i the MVP (our MVP was a returning player which is wick), so I probably need to film my new self in order to show that i’m serious. What do you think i should do?
FYI, i live in Canada, my basketball region is part of the GTA. A couple of guys went to US prep school while two guys went to D1 and one went to D3. I think elite teams are pretty competitive. Mine went to the quarter finals of the regional.

maybe i should ask this question in the recruit section

Well, I don’t play basketball, but I play hockey and I have learned a little but about recruiting along the way.

Scouts don’t look at unsolicited video.

If they were interested, they would most likely contact the head coach for his thoughts on you.

Then look at how many games you had played in and which teams you played against.

Then randomly select 3 or 4 games you had played in and request full video of these games

This gives them an unpolished look at your game

The next step would then be to decide if a in person look was warranted.

Not to mention a recruitement video is only going to show you playing well.

I know tons of players like to think of themselves as undiscovered, but only about .00001% of the time thats the case

bentley thanks for dashing my hope lol

my idea of a tape is not even highlights of games lol, i’m leaning more towards a video filmed on the playground of me doing dunks and stuff. In basketball, athletcism is extremely important so i’m kind of banking on that

hey!

what have you got to lose =P

If you want any real shot of the coach helping you get into the school (not scholarship or anything), he needs to see you play in person whether it’s a high school game (maybe too late?) or summer camps or tournaments. Tapes do very little, esp if you plan on going to a top educational university as in the Ivies, as lots of people have already taken this path (though Cal Tech is still pretty desperate haha)
