Vassar College Work~INPUT!?

I heard the work load is intense. I’m down for it, but like when people say “hard” or “intense”- what do they mean by this? Like how many hours of reading is given on a day due next class? Or writing, etc. Please elaborate on workload and difficulty is possible!

Husband (in his 40’s) and his cousin’s son (in his 20’s) both went there. I do not think the workload is heavier than at other top liberal arts colleges. Yes, you will do several hours of homework every day-- but unlike in high school, most of your day is free, so you have plenty of time to get the work done AND do an extracurricular or two or a campus job AND spend some time hanging out with friends.
If you worked hard enough in high school to have the GPA to get into Vassar, you probably have the work ethic to handle the workload. If you were able to excel in your high school without doing a few hours of work each night, you might be in for a bit of culture shock at any top college, but you say you’re “down for it,” so I think you will adjust quickly.

My daughter is a freshman and she is finding the workload pretty intense. I don’t think it’s anything she can’t handle but I also think it is more than she expected. While she is a fast reader, I don’t think she is particularly efficient with her work. She has four classes and 25 books. I’m not sure if that is typical or not, but I think for some class periods she has a few hundred pages of reading.

There is a video on the vassar.com site interviewing students about what their day looked like. Everyone basically reported being overcommitted… but they were smiling about it. Son’s workload there seems pretty intense, but he does have time for extracurriculars. He’s a poor planner, but he does read, synthesize, think and write very quickly, and he still winds up working for 12 to 18 hours at a stretch at frequent intervals throughout the semester. And he goes back for more every time.

Basically I think a lot of the kids have the sense that they are privileged to be there and want to make as much of it as they can.
