URGENT Question about Workload!!!

Hi, guys!

I'm an admitted student, and I'm tryingb to decide between Haverford and Oberlin, which admitted me off the wait list. This is such a hard decision and I need your help please!

I'm wondering what the workload would be like to the hours on week days and on weekends. How many hours work outside class would an hour in class require? How much sleep people get on average. I know it depends on the major (I plan to take some social sciences courses.), but I just need a basic impression.

Please reply soon if you can as I am supposed to give an answer fast!

Thank you sooooo very much!

Please, someone!!

(I noticed that many people view thread on this board, but don’t tend to reply. Don’t worry as anything could help!)

Also, I’d love to know how workload could vary from one institution to another since I think students mostly take the same number of courses and should have basically same homework? What do you mean by nitense? (I’m an international student, so I could use some american common snese about regular workload and a heavy one.)

Intense workload would be if you had no life other than studying. I don’t think Haverford has that. My S just finished his first year and seemed to do fine with the workload, although it did get heavy at times. That’s to be expected anywhere.

He was told to only take 4 classes, which helps keep things manageable. Some colleges have kids taking 5 or 6 classes a semester, which would be much closer to intense than Haverford.

Aside from workload, what do you see as pluses and minuses of Haverford versus pluses and minuses of Oberlin? Make lists!

The distinguishing feature you should be considering has very little to do with the school but rather location which will impact quality of life. As an international student, I think location would be the clear deciding factor. Both DC and NYC are an easy weekend trip from Philly and I went to DC 3 times while at HC for extra-curricular activities. NYC can be fun over a 3 day weekend. Philly is the 5th largest city in the US and has internationally recognized museums such as the Rodin, Barnes, and Philly Museum of Art. The food is spectacular and affordable for college students for the occasional (monthly) city adventure/escape from campus (farmer’s market, Chinatown, south philly). The Philly Orchestra is internationally recognized and the opera isn’t too bad either. The professional sports teams… well, they’ll break your heart each season but still fun to watch if you’re a fan. College is about both academics and growing in other ways as well. HC’s location facilitates both but, as a prospective international student, provides a unique resource to explore the US not matched by many other LACs.
