I'm a vegan, and from what I understand Wellesley has one vegetarian/vegan dining hall. I'm just wondering, do they take this into account at all with room assignments or do first years pretty much get what they get?

From what I remember, Wellesley don’t ask you about food preferences on the housing form. You will get what you will get.

Yeah, they didn’t ask for this information last summer. I know people with specific dining preferences though and they either managed to move to a new dorm after the freeze or they learned to live with walking to the dining hall.

Oh ok thanks! I’ll be fine. I’d still happily go to Wellesley if they made me live in a closet
What’s the freeze?

The housing freeze is when no one is allowed to switch rooms.

A lot of dining halls will take into account that there are vegetarians and vegans, and always have a variety of options available. You can write feedback cards that the dining hall staff reads if you like something/would prefer something else, and they’re very responsive and thoughtful.

Each dining hall does have vegetarian and vegan options, so you’ll be able to eat no matter where you live on campus. And you can always walk to the vegetarian/vegan dining hall for your meals; the campus is not that spread out.

I know they changed food service companies since I left Wellesley, but in general, everything vegetarian and vegan in the main food lines were labelled as such, whether the item was obvious or not (white rice= vegan) (also, sometimes, contains pork or contains alcohol). Is this still the case?

I think it varies. Sometimes I’ve seen signs, sometimes not.

AVI Fresh (the new company this year) has been iffy about signs this past fall. However, many students have commented about it and they have put out more information. You can always ask the dining hall staff if you want to know more about specific ingredients in a dish.
