Just feel like venting about some things I'm not happy with from last semester's grades.

So in one of my classes, I get a 99,97,95 and 97 on my 4 exams (40 % of grade) (WHY ARE EXAMS ONLY 40% OF OUR GRADE???)
I get a 90 on my 20 minute presentation/project (20% of grade)
I average +- 95 on my 20 quizzes (20% of grade)
and I get a 90 in my participation (20% of grade) (1. HOW COULD I GET A 90 WHEN I SPOKE UP AND WENT TO EVERY CLASS??? 2. Why is there a participation grade when he doesn't count attendance??? 3. WHY IS PARTICIPATION GRADE 20%???)

I'm ****ed because throughout the year I thought I had an easy A until I found out at the last moment that I need +95 to get an A (got a 94). Way to not check the syllabus and think think that it'd be graded like a normal class where it's 92+ for the A.

Anyone else feel like venting?? (I'm sure a lot of people have a lot more to complain about than me lol)

i got a 100% and 89% on my calc mid terms, which is like 20 pts higher than the average, so i thought the class was a joke, and got very cocky, and when final comes, i scored average, ended up with a B+ in the class, f***!! lol.

I asked my prof how I could find out how well I did on my calc final. His response was “put a envelope and stamp in my mailbox by 2:30 this afternoon and I will mail you the results” Seriously? it should be required that teachers make grades available online, especially with what I pay for tuition…thats my rant.

Bloody hell 95% for an A, 90% for a B?!! That’s intense! Do most colleges grade like this? You’re talking about essay exams, right?

In the UK it’s 70% for a 1st class and that’s the highest grade, even then less than 20% get that. In fact only 3 people in my year of 140 got one last semester.

I will never be able to be that perfect, congrats guys! x

^ In most of my classes (biochemistry major) the average grade on the exam is around 60% - 75%. If 90% were a B, no one would pass the class lol! Usually on the syllabus the professor will put the grading scale (e.g: 75% = A, 70% = A-, etc).

In my biology classes, the curve is done so 50% gets in the A or B range and 50% gets in the C, D or F range. In my chem and physics classes, it wasn’t like this; in chem, the majority of students got at least a C in the course, there were very few D’s or F’s which was awesome.

@mechmark: I’m sorry, that sounds sucky In my college professors are required to post final grades by a certain date/time on Blackboard (online). It would be too much of a hassle to snail-mail them one by one! I wonder why they don’t just post them online there?

I got a B in Abstract algebra. Professor gave me 3/10 points on my last homework assignment. And then, for some f-ed up reason, 1 person got 30/30 on the final, and everyone else got 22/30 or below. I got a 20 and I thought I aced it. I email the professor about getting my final back, so I can find out what’s wrong. He told me to come back in a year because that’s the university policy. WTTTTFFF?

Heh, typically the ones who need a 92+ for an A are in the easiest classes. Usually multiple choice “exams” with a couple short answers that they call essays.

It’s nothing to praise us for. I’ve seen the exams you take; these are not comparable. There ARE classes and exams that are difficult, but they’re NEVER 92+ for A’s. They’re always curved and usually 60+ ends up around the A range.

comparable in what way? Am I right to assume that you guys get really difficult exams and people tend to get really low scores?

My math teacher came from U Cambridge. I thought he was hilarious at first (english accent and wild beard), but then gave me a B and told me that I could pick up my final exam next year.

Come to think of it. In his class, a 90 was a B+ last semester. You needed like a 95 to get an A.

'comparable in what way? Am I right to assume that you guys get really difficult exams and people tend to get really low scores? ’

If that was aimed at me, then yes. Last semester I had to write at least 2 essays and then a section of paragraph answers, where they asked for diagrams of processes they taught orally. It was insane. I sat there aghast, everyone the same, looking at each other like ***. It is more common to fail a module here. But that just might be my uni and my course (Genetics).

It’s also 70-100% worth of exams. Is it like that for you guys?

A 2.1 class is above average, a first is pretty good. (It goes 1st, 2.1, 2.2, 3, fail)

ps. don’t diss the crazy English; we are amazing :D.

In college, exams here are worth a lot too. But the professors like to make sure you understand the stuff. I mean when they know something is going to be on the test, they’ll at least draw a diagram and explain it more extensively.

I think I blew my entire freshman year stressing over grades. Yeah I got a 4.0, but I didn’t go that many parties, didn’t get in a relationship, didn’t do much in terms of activities, and in terms of my physics fitness-ehhh…

I got mostly A- grades as opposed to As because I made some silly study decisions that hurt me. And also because I decided to take Chinese…which I’m pretty sure affected my performance in other classes.

I applied for finance internships like a blind man a few months ago. I ended up getting nothing, not even an interview. I cold-called many local hedge funds and private wealth management firms, and still nothing!

Either I am too obsessed about getting employment in the future, or I was too proud to consult the career center first before diving in… Oh well, I will consult the career center this September. Hopefully, I will land an internship.

Personally, I didn’t stress out over grades much at all and did reasonably well. I currently have a 3.4+.
