Venting about GPAs!

Taxguy, I do not want to beat up on you but I looked on the U of Cinncinnati website to see the criteria on the DAAP program. Here is the website for the DAAP program admission criteria. http://www.daap.uc.edu/admissions/Admissions_SOD.pdf

I can't cut and paste what you are talking about but it says on the website: that for EA you do have to have an ACT of 25 or SAT of 1130 and class rank of 10% or a min. GPA of 3.75. Higher test scores allow for a lower class rank e.g. an ACT of 30 or a SAT of 1320 requires a class rank of top 35% or a min. GPA of 3.75.

If you don't meet those criteria you will be considered for Final Selection in Dec. 2005.

So it does seem that they do allow for lower class rank for EA but not a lower GPA. That would seem to help those who have a more competive HS. It does seem that they do make a decision on everyone pretty early, by December instead of what Oct. or Nov. It also seems to state that you have to have one or another class rank or GPA. I'm not sure what they do if your school doesn't rank, does that mean that you have to have the min. GPA. Now that would stink.

I do agree with you on the GPA issue. My S has not a super great uw GPA, but a good ACT. He also has a upward trend in his grades and has challenged himself in his classes, going from a regular track to AP. He can into the schools that he wants but he doesn't qualify for scholarships because of the relatively low GPA. There is a kid in his school who has not challenged himself, stays in the regular classes. He has a much better uw GPA but his w GPA is virtually the same as my S. He is applying to much different schools than my S, ones my S (we believe) has no chance of getting into. I will be very interested in where he ends up. If the decision to stay in regular classes and boost your uw GPA will work.

Response: our schools doesn't rank, as is true of most competitive schools here. Moreover, it is true, as you have stated, that they want a minimum GPA of 3.75 for EA and 3.5 for regular, but that is UNWEIGHTED!-- and Yes, I have confirmed this with the admission's office. Thus, a kid with 3.4 unweighted GPA but taking all honors and has a weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher, will not get accepted over a kid with 3.6 unweighted GPA with no honors or AP. Read over the requirements again. You will see my point.

Also the top 10% requirement is for affirmative action in order to bring in more under represented minorities. It is the back door approach to AA though--- Yes, this was also told to me by one of the admission's officers with whom I become friendly.

Carolyn - that's true, but as best I can tell, all art, dance, drama, chorus and band classes at the high schools around here are UC approved. I can imagine a circumstance where that would not be the case, but I think most garden variety art and performing art classes are considered "academic" by UC.
