I'm just now beginning the packing process, and I'm not even sure where to start! What is trendy now and what will last me through the wintertime? Are you out of town/state people bringing lots of pictures and frames with you?

And just for fun... what item can you not bear to part with that you'll definitely be packing for college?

Forgive my ignorance, but who is Vera Bradley?

It doesn't really get that cold in Southern California-my relatives have told me that it doesn't really get below 45 degrees Farenheight max in LA although it can be overcast. I wouldn't bring all tank tops and shorts, but if you bring a mix of somewhat warmer clothing you'll probably be fine. And if you find that if you're missing anything, you can always ask your family to ship it over or just pick it up when you go back home to visit. I'm from NorCal where we actually do get something of a winter, contrary to popular opinion, and it's gotten down to 30 degrees Farenheight here; for someone who lives in Ohio I'm sure that feels like nothing!

haha vera bradley is like the louis vuitton of the midwest and south. do a lot of people wear sweats or athletic shorts? because if not, i'm in trouble...

i dont think a college campus would be a very good representation if you're asking if people wear sweats/athletic shorts...i'm sure people dont care nearly as much about what they're wearing when its 750 in the morning and class is at 800 haha.

as for the rest of us not yet rolling out of bed and into class, a few people wear sweats and athletic shorts around here...just let it be known, the LA crowd might not look too kindly on someone in them...except in the unlikely case you're into hardcore (punk) music, where black Starter shorts and a band shirt are standard issue :p i personally would not wear anything "sweatier" than a hoody out of the house.

"case you're into hardcore (punk) music, where black Starter shorts and a band shirt are standard issue"

hell yes, but I don't wear those clothes...usually tight jeans and shirts with a combat cap (castro issue) and a nice black jacket with puffy fur lining on the hood.

Kids at USC are somewhat fashionable. It isn't uncommon to see polos, popped collars, or burberry scarfs on students. Unfortunately, there are a lot of women who like to wear uggs with skirts, which is quite possibly the worst fashion choice ever.

Or they could all be wearing counterfeit brand clothes...

Forgive my extreme ignorance, but what exactly is a popped collar? Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen one before. Someone who doesn't turn down their collar?

any kind of leather strap sandals are pretty popular...i wouldn't wear them personally (except to the beach), but tons of people love them around here (i noticed a lot at USC Orientation). usually the people who do wear them are also the type who wear Abercrombie/Hollister, American Eagle, or any of those kind of stores, which seem to be pretty popular right now. again, i dont wear it because i'm not huge on "pop" wear, but i cant say it looks bad.

i guess you could say i dress popular alternative...not so much popular, but among people in a certain group it's common. i wear skate/surf brands like Volcom, Billabong, Quicksilver, Hurley, etc. button ups with Vans. i dont really take brand into consideration when i buy shirts or anything, just whatever looks good...but often those brands have what i feel are better looking clothes.

The vast majority of college-age Californians wear some kind of flip flop or other sandal outside of the dorm showers. The cultural differences between Southern and Northern California were bigger than I expected, as strange as that sounds. People in the LA area appear a little more dressy and designer conscious in a laid-back sort of way, if that makes any sense. Unfortunately I've been wearing an all-girls school uniform for roughly 6.75 years so I'm afraid I'm not too helpful on the clothes front! For girls (and probably guys, too, if you look) the various local street fairs and the garment district have a lot of quirky, interesting clothes at reasonable prices that you won't find anywhere else, so I'd suggest looking there.

Ordinarily I would say northface is overkill for socal winters, but the past two years the winters have been really cold and rainy (for the un-california-ated, "cold" means 50 degrees lol)

So I would have one or two sets of light winter gear, including sweatshirt with hood, thicker long pants, and maybe a windbreaker or rainbreaker. And an umbrella, too, since when it rains there's not many roofs to go under outside :)

lonefreckle: I can't speak for all Californians, but at my high school in Fullerton (Orange County...and no, we're NOT stereotypical), lots of people shop at Abercrombie, Hollister (the high-school/cheaper version of Abercrombie), American Eagle, Express, bebe, Aeropostale, Forever 21, PacSun/Pacific Sunwear, Gap, Old Navy, Anchor Blue, Rampage, Nordstrom Brass Plum, Macy's, Victoria's Secret (girls like wearing sweats & sleep shirts from their Pink collection)...just your average shopping mall stores.

The coldest months are in January & February...I think the temperature went below 40 a few times last year (gasp!). =P You can tell I'm a California girl. Don't own a particularly heavy jacket, so when it gets cold, I wear 4 layers, topped by a USC sweatshirt.

However, if your city has H & M --- buy lots there. We don't get an H & M store in Los Angeles until sometime this fall & all the westside kids (rather trend-setters here) love it. When it comes, it'll be in Pasadena & Beverly Center requiring a car or an intrepid attitude to public transportation. Us LA locals are allergic to busses!!!

I agree with all other posts on Hollister, beach wear, etc. Rainbow sandals are almost a uniform here on the westside.

I don't even know what Vera Bradley is. Two weeks ago, I was in Pasadena, saw the covered storefront of the upcoming H&M, and got really giddy. =P

Just make sure that you actually bring a sweatshirt or jacket. I know several (guys mainly) who didn't. It tends to get cold at night, although right now it is steaming hot!
