Verdict is in ... flat applications at Ivies Plus

I bet that just puts the cherry on your sundae, goldenboy! Because nothing is better than when people genuflect at the mention of Duke. I mean, that’s how really secure people draw their self-esteem – from what others think.

goldenboy,
Xiggi rarely makes a statement without considering other facts. He has been doing research on colleges, and posting useful information here for many years.
Tale a look at his post count. Now look at yours.

I suggest you stop trying to impress us with your continued efforts to correct his post.

“I mean, that’s how really secure people draw their self-esteem – from what others think.”

LOL!! Love it!!!

Most of these posts should start with “don’t have coffee or tea in your mouth when you read this post”…and that includes the posts by goldenboy.

Thanks for the helpful advice 3togo! I’m relatively new to the site so I didn’t think it was appropriate to hijack xiggi’s thread and add new figures to the tabulation. I will do so shortly when I get some time.

People draw their self-esteem from a variety of different sources Pizzagirl–family adulation, drugs, clothing, sex life, facial features, money, responsibilities held, etc. etc. etc. Being proud of one’s alma mater is among the self-esteem boosters that is far more justifiable.

Secure people don’t project their thoughts and feelings upon others in an attempt to denigrate their beliefs or make wise cracks that add no value to a discussion. By your own reasoning, you shouldn’t care if I waxed poetic about Duke in every single thread on this forum. That’s my prerogative.

Yes, I’m proud of my alma mater too. But I draw my self-esteem from what I think, not what others think. My alma mater certainly is “up there” by any reasonable measure, but yet it didn’t upset me that it wasn’t included in xiggi’s short list. See, I’m secure enough that I don’t have to respond to any mention of it (or overlooking of it) by yelling, “It most certainly IS the bestest in the world, can’t you see that?”

um… isn’t that exactly what your posts are doing? That, or perhaps just dominating it. Not much difference.

There as another poster sparring away in the “schools you wouldnt want to send your kid to” thread. You and he might get along famously.

^^or maybe they are twins separated at birth? In any event it would be nice to have more posters who arent here just to see their words appear online or to let the" rest of the community" know how highly they rate their own alma mater…

Y’know, just for the record, it’s threads like this one that make me hesitate before recommending CC to any kids/parents out there looking for information to help them in their college search. They start out innocently clicking on a thread like this and run the other way. It’s too bad, because there really is a lot of useful info to be found…

Yes, and as everybody knows, a high post count on CC is a guarantee of wisdom.

I think that Chicago and Duke should be included and that’s why I asked xiggi to do so and update his list. It was xiggi and others here that then went off on a sardonic rant. Like I mentioned before, I’m more concerned with accountability and using fair comparisons than putting on airs. Sorry if you feel like I was putting Duke on a pedestal because I certainly wasn’t; I thought I made that abundantly clear by including Chicago as well. At any rate, the reputation of Duke and Northwestern (your alma mater) speaks for themselves, they require no online validation by xiggi and the overlords of College Confidential.

Re: Post # 50: what a helpful post

Now, back to topic. Even with the common app and universal app, sooner or later application #s will plateau or take the normal statistical variance that will happen based on statisticla probabilities. No reflection on most schools.

And I agree with BurkeSt. It is a shame that useful threads are being turned into a remake of the Ali-Frazier fight.

Goldenboy- We went on a ‘Rant’ ( I highly doubt any of us was actually upset while posting) because you needlessly attacked xiggi for REPORTING statistics and then making claims based on flawed reasoning. Stop playing the victim.

I think that xiggi can include/exclude any schools he/she wants when starting a thread, but I’m wondering what menloparkmom means by the above. It could be interpreted that those of us with lower post counts must defer to the opinions of any and all posters with higher counts.

The problem with post count is that Cafe posts don’t count in the count! So- all the wisdom posted in the Cafe is not reflected in the post counts.

not putting on airs? Then how would you describe these condescending statements that you made?
" It’s time for you to realize that there are two other great universities out there besides Stanford and MIT that match the Ivies head to head in desirability"
"you will see that this entire thread is moot "
“Fine, you can feel free to post whatever you want but I will also feel free to declare this thread to be garbage and let the whole community here know that is how I feel.”
“It may be an inconvenient truth to you xiggi but it’s fact.”

do you see a pattern here? your tone and your elevated sense of superiority regarding what is only your own opinion is what puts other posters off. So if you want to DISCUSS what another poster has said, I suggest you do so in a manner that does not show your disdain in such a rude and blatant manner.

Post count alone does not correlate with wisdom. Not counting the posters with the postcount glitch that makes them look like they have millions of posts, there are some with like 30K posts or more!! Does it count if they say the same thing ad infinitum? ;)

Oh, and well said, menlo.

There was NO NEED for Xiggi to update HIS list. You could have started your own thread or politely said that you thought these two schools should be added.

I personally think MY kid’s college be in the top 20…but I don’t badger other people who don’t share my opinion.

Why doesn’t college confidential have a like/dislike button? I think it would be useful and send messages to some posters
