Very hard for middle class

Well what exactly is middleclass? Someone earlier said they heard people earning 30000 calling themselves midle class..but they would obviously get tons of finaid..and I've heard people making 10x that amount also calling themselves middle class..and they would likely get none..but in general, I think the whole 80000-150000 range gets screwed.

And to whoever said that saying middle class has it harder is ignorant..in terms of PAYING for private colleges, that isn't ignorant its a fact.

Gustave Flaubert would be chortling in his grave if he could read this. (For Flaubert's opinion of the bourgeoisie, read "Madame Bovary.")

In any case, I think that colleges really should be more lenient with their financial aid: a family who makes $100,000/year where I live could not reasonably pay for more than one child's education at a time unless they had been saving since college. Socioeconomic diversity does not mean just having the very rich and the very poor. There must be some middle ground, and I think that the little zing of bitter cynicism from today's suburban youth will add philosophical diversity to campuses as well. And isn't diversity a good thing?

No worries there. The wealthier you are, the more resources you have, and the less you have to worry about. Chances are your upbringings and environment were much easier as were. A poorer student with the same stats as me is a significantly better achievement for him/her.

Did you ever read my post? I climbed out from disadvantage class myself. I have lived life with family income < $15k. You want an easy life? Why not your parents climbed out from the disadvantage? Or better yet, you can go to a less prestige college and work to pay for it (like I what I did) then work yor butt off so that your kid can get a better chance?

You know what? My kid might not even have an easy life like you when s/he was young. A lot times we had to drag him away from McDonald to deny him a kid meal or an ice cream. We never send him to prep school or any sat prep class, he attends the public school like most black, hispanic, white kids live in the area. Their school though do provide free sat prep classes for low income families. If you are truely intelectual or smart enough, go compete with ppl have the same ability, don't hide behind excuse after excuse after excuse.....It is always easy to blame the society, unfairness, rather work to pull yourself out the dirt.

"1300+ is by no means dumb."

lol

^ i belive thats a fairly true statement (1300/1600)
You guys should read the World is flat by friedman.
Nowadays its more advantageous to be extremly intelligent from compton, than to be mediocre from pougskeepsie.

Well I'm sorta in the lower middle class...or probably middle middle class--$55,000. I also agree with A-Card about middle class working hard. My parents work 8-9 hrs every day, and they still have to pay off taxes, utilities, insurance, etc. What does that leave us for college? Not much, unless we had some money saved (which we don't). We used to be pretty poor, but as time progressed, both my parents received better pay. But they're still really worried about how we're going to pay for college.

.....and when they do, they deserve to be rewarded. Their path is undoubtedly much harder than mine, they deserve this one 'advantage', which is still no equalizer at all.
