very naive SAT question

My daughter and i are new to this so forgive these basic questions.

She's a junior and is taking the SAT for 1st time on Saturday....on the form, there's an option to send the score to 4 colleges....but she since removed that because she doesn't want those colleges to see the score in case its low (we have no baseline so we don't know how she'll do).

So let's say that the scores are good...can she later send them? Or is that chance gone?

She can send them, but she’ll have to pay for the privilege.

thanks Maine…so do you think she should just go ahead & send them now? to save the money & make it easier? (I do think she’ll get decent scores).

And here’s another newtimer question…what do the colleges do with these scores? As a junior, she hasn’t sent in any applications…so there’s nothing on file…so do they just hold them in case an application should arrive in a year or so?

If your daughter plans to take the SAT multiple times, I would recommend that she not use the 4 free score reports the first time she takes the test. Most first-time test-takers are nervous; consequently, their focus and time management on that first SAT is suboptimal. Often times this situation results in significant score “deflation.”

In my experience, students who prepare properly post improved scores on subsequent tests. Using the “regular” score reporting option (not Score Choice), students can send all previous SAT scores on file with College Board to a given college. Theoretically, this means that your daughter could use one of the four “free” score reports on a subsequent SAT to send scores from that test date (and all previous test dates) to a college.

FYI, some colleges request that all SAT scores be sent, whereas others accept only the scores students reveal via the Score Choice option. To complicate matters, score reporting policies can change from year to year.

For more information about Score Choice, check out [this webpage on the College Board website](<a href=“The SAT – SAT Suite | College Board”>Send SAT Scores to Colleges - SAT Suite | College Board).

Personally, I wish that College Board did away with Score Choice. It complicates matters for everyone involved…but I do realize that it makes the company a little extra money in the long run and some students like the option of “hiding” a bad score from their dream college.

Hope you find this info helpful…

My daughter always took advantage of the 4 “free” sends largely due to finances. She’s applying to a lot of schools and it’s pricey when you start calculating sending SAT scores and possibly multiple ACT’s. She used them for the state schools, safety’s and privates that required all scores. In truth, she did send to a couple schools she since decided not to apply to. She didn’t send to the most selective schools on her list.

We’re comfortable with the choice and it saved us some money but it’s really up to you guys.

If your D regularly does well on standardized tests then using the free reporting would probably be fine.

In a related question-if a student takes SAT II exams and they choose to have the scores sent to 4 colleges, can the SAT I scores go as well, or only the current exams? Can’t seem to find the answer on the CB site. Thanks.

A related question - my D is taking her 2nd SAT Subject test this Saturday. If she sends her SAT scores and one prior SAT Subject score now, will her 2nd SAT Subject score be automatically sent when the score is available, or will she have to go to the CB website and send that separately? And if that is the case, will she have to pay to send the latest subject score? Thanks in advance.

If she took the PSAT, I’d send a free one to them now. If she makes NMSF, and she scores above a 1960 on the SAT, you won’t have to worry about it next fall. If she doesn’t make NMSF, no harm no foul. If her SAT is too low, she can send a retake.
