Video Game Design

Looking for a video game design program for my son who had an IEP in high school and has benefitted from extra time on the SATs, school tests and assignments.

He has been accepted to Becker College, with a scholarship, in Worster, MA, and to Monmouth and waitlisted at Drexel. Becker is clearly the most affordable and they said they do help with learning disabilities. The school is very small though. Any thoughts on this school?

Monmouth does not offer a major in design, only a concentration.

Went to visit Monmouth and loved the campus. The school is more expensive but I feel there are more opportunities there if he decides to change his major and steer away from strictly gaming. Thoughts please?

You might want to look at RIT. I have a daughter with ASD and her younger sister will attend there in the Fall as an illustration major. We brought along our daughter with ASD on our visit to RIT a couple of weeks ago for the accepted student’s open house and the daughter with ASD seemed a little more open to the possibility of going away to school at some point (possibly because her sister will be going there, hard to tell though). I have been in touch with other parents with ASD kids going to RIT and my understanding is that they have excellent support services for kids with disabilities. I know that they have a game design program there, as does Rensselaer.

D1 was accepted at Becker and Drexel and chose Drexel–but deferred for a year so is starting in September. This year she is in an internship program right next door to Becker’s campus. The game design program at Becker is superb and the faculty seemed very nice and supportive. We didn’t discuss disability supports in detail (but D1 also had an IEP with extended time) because she decided on Drexel. Our concern about Becker was its small size, limited extracurriculars and limited challenge in other subject areas–for example, D1 took AP calc in 11th grade and by doing that totally maxed out the entire math curriculum at Becker. You can however take one class a semester at any other school in the Worcester consortium as well as participate in most extracurriculars at other schools, and there is a shuttle than runs between campuses. Oh, and Worcester is COLD and gets a TON of snow during the winter! Good luck!
