Video Games!

I would not consider myself a geek or nerd by any means, but what kinds of games do you guys play? I used to be a WoW addict and now play WC3 and Halo 3, and am applying to Cornell, JHU, Brown, etc. How about you guys?

There were a couple threads about this on HSL, and I'll just repost some of the things I said there. I'm a major gamer, playing about 2~3 hours on weekdays and 4~5 hours on weekdays, now a soph, freshman year/middle school I gamed pretty much all day weekdays, weekends I exercised and went out. Video games don't mean you're a geek, as my description would certainly entail, but I'm certainly not obese, non-social, and etc. I do my share of exercising, going out w/friends, and so on.

Either way: To start off, I'll list some games that I've recently played (these aren't favorites, just random games).
MGS4 - PS3 (I actually don't own one, so I have to run over to my cousin's/friends' closeby a couple days a week). Epic game.
Brawl - Self-explanatory. Also at friends' though. I use random, but I've recently gotten into Snake (tilt = ...godstatus).
Orange Box -
Warcraft III : Frozen Throne- Last I played this was 6 months ago. I've gotten rusty using the Night Elves, but eh.
C&C3 - No explanation required.
WoW - No explanation as well (other than the fact that I don't own this and I don't pay monthly).
WH 40,000 - DoW I know it's old. Meh, it's still fairly decent.
Starcraft BW Also haven't touched this for a year; got really rusty, barely beat a 1v3 melee myself. Shows how rusty I am now...(waiting for the 2nd one, obviously).
AoM - what can I say. I was bored, although this is still not a bad game once in a while. Definitely doesn't trump the Blizzards' in most people's eyes.
MapleStory - Shock. I log in once in a while because I have a couple friends that still play.
Portal - No explanation required.
Starcraft- Used to be a big fan in middle school, haven't played for 1 year 1/2 and played it yesterday, got really rusty (like barely winning 1v3 computer).

Lots of RTS's nowadays, a decent share of FPS, consoles, RPG, and etc. Too many to list, I don't even feel like I've listed 1% of the games I play/like/have played. For ex, I left out BF2, Call of duty's, Sims, H2H, Dragon Age, DoD, Assassin's Creed, and a lot more. Once people start posting their games, I'll probably chime in.

And not sure if some of these still apply now, since I've posted this a couple weeks ago, but here are some random games I'm really looking forward to (I curtailed my list exponentially) :
-Starcraft II (probably among the very top of my list)
-Final Fantasy XIII
-World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (expecting a lot here, but meh)
-Diablo III (hope it's better than II)
-Resident Evil 5
-BioShock 2
-GTAIV (lol I expect epicness here as well)
-Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
-Crysis Warhead (eh, we'll see)
-Left 4 Dead
-Fallout 3 (LOL, maybe just for the lulz)
-Guild II : Venice (just because..)
-GHIII (lol)
-CoD : World at War
-ShellShock 2 : Blood Trails (kinda)
-Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir (maybe)
-Fear II : Project Origin

I've seen too many people screw up their lives getting addicted to video games. Madden and Wii sports with friends is about all I play.

There are actually a lot more people in existence that play games and have perfectly normal lives, but the common notion of somehow video games = failure, obesity and all these news articles somehow distort that picture; I fortunately am one of the former..
And just about every other person I know in High school, at least, does a decent share of gaming (like the person above my post).

I left out the sports games. ;)

Really? I would guess that less than 20% of the people I know really play video games outside of the occasional mario kart, madden, etc.

I'm sure there are all sorts of functioning, normal people who play video games, but there are also plenty who end up spending way too much time on WoW, and not enough time on their homework. Besides, I'd much rather go play pickup basketball or baseball than play a video game. To each his own, I guess.

gittar hero's fun

That little DS/PS2 every-other-day is what I meant, lol. Guys, that is. Every guy I know at my school owns at least 1 game system...

And I actually am a sports fan too; it's just that it's more difficult for me to play sports 3 hours daily for many reasons as opposed to gaming which is quick, fun, and easy. I agree about the fact that there are many gaming addicts out there...no one would dispute that, really. When someone gets to how video games = auto-failure in life, as I know many adults tend to hold in regard, that's when I find some problems.

I stopped playing video games hardcore (RPG and RTS almost exclusively) a long time ago, and the only exception in the last two years was Super Mario Brothers Brawl, of which a private student was fond.

In the Square Enix Games, I used to stop playing to listen to the detailed musical scores by Mitsuda, Hamauzu, Shimomura, Uematsu, etc, but this just sent me to learn music. Now I just read the storylines (some FAQ spoilers are set out like unconventional books), take a look at the artwork and listen to extraordinary soundtracks. The RPG/RTS series/titles include, of course, Last Odyssey, Final Fantasy (played II, IV, V, VI, TA and IX; studied all) Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Profile, Mana, Fire Emblem, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, Xenosaga/Xenogears, Command and Conquer (w/RA), Dune, Tales, Fable and Homeworld. I don't actually play them, but I have read many bestiaries, piano score collections, mythologies, storylines and weapons lists etc.

Yeah the GBA/DS style ones like Square Enix are a plus as well - FF games (including Tactics..LOL), Fire Emblem, Advanced Wars, CT was a good one.

Wait, so you don't play video games but study and read about them?

bascially as a junior i wuld play vid games almost everday like for an hour. Now i took 5 ap's so maybe this was not a good idea? lol. I don't do anything for hs, just play vid games and listen to music like all the time.

PacMan
Asteroids
Return to Castle Wolfenstien
Medal of Honor Allied Assault

Frankly, I do not know anyone who has not enjoyed Super Smash Brothers. If there is no party around or nothing else to do, my friends and I will just play this forever (99x live matches for the win?). Also, its not like we are house hermits, all of my friends including me play a varsity sport at a high level, along with being table tennis enthusiasts. Being a gamer definitely should not insinuate not being intelligent. I would say of the top 10% GPA-wise in my school, about 7% play video games, while about 4% of those are hardcore gamers.

Super Smash Brothers Wii and DDR.

More like epic movie, lol

Yippydiddles.
Better uses for time and money (and these days I'm just not even studying games...).
On the other hand, I don't turn down Super Smash invitations.

I play a lot of videogames too, but not as often. Recently, I played DDR and Mario Kart, but Mario Kart got boring really quickly....other than that, I think Super Smash Brawl is also very fun...and so are the Wii Sports.

Oh, yay, a video-game thread ^_^. I'm a girl gamer, inherited the bug from my older brother. I bought myself a PS3 last year and have acquired GTA-IV, Metal-Gear and Assasin's Creed. Phooey, don't have enough time to game though, especially now with all the applications...
Most recently though I've been playing Earthbound 2, because the fan translation was released! Earthbound [or Mother2] was a game from my childhood, I mean I still actually HAVE my SNES! So I'm happily nostalgic and enjoying the quirky humor of the game :).

...First girl I've seen that's played Assassin's Creed, MGS4, and GTAIV. Epic own.
