Videos and College Admissions

...in many cases colleges find these video resumes helpful and even necessary. However, it all depends on the video, the applicant, and, of course, the college.

:) And videos are not just for sports..videos can (in my case) demonstrate your knowledge of visual arts, computer graphics, research skills (via documentaries), communications skills (via feature films), etc. etc. etc.

I dunno, it seems to me like this could become one of the new college fads and loads of parents will be getting professionally edited film footage of their kids for colleges. Kinda like the scene in Legally Blonde ;-) . In all seriousness, though, I hope this doesn't become yet another way to indirectly discriminate against lower-income families in the cut-throat process that college apps have become.

I am sure that now this has been posted, many families will rush to the nearest film company to get their tape made. All thanks to cc! ;-)

NYU Tisch school requires a video. Have you seen legally blonde? haha

I know...If only getting into Harvard law were that easy. I'm sure that they must have received a flood of such videos from overachievers after the film came out. ;-)

sorry i didn't know you mentioned legally blonde until now. I didn't add that "haha" to question the validity of your comment. the laugh strictly goes to my comment.

ugh, this makes me soo glad that i'm a senior. and already into my 1st choice school. this would be incredibly stressful.

It makes sense for athletes.

I hope it remains over-the-top for all others.

My God, a highschooler's life is gonna become hell in the future..

Video is necessary if your EC is dance, drama, etc. Many schools ask for video if you can't audition in person. It can be included with your Art Supplement.

We have a very talented student at our high school who has been involved with the school's broadcasting program. She has made professional looking athletic tapes for various school athletes to submit with their applications and then also used the same tapes as part of her portfolio. Win - win situation.

Just don't do this.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=AExtO-dD8so

haha, that was great. The brick part was quite obvious

This is a good idea for athletes but other than that it may be over-done and reflect negatively especially if it is obviously professionally made and has little substance.

give me a break.

all of this college admissions crap is going to get more and more ridiculous for the next 5-10 years and then the bubble will burst because it can't get any more ridiculous or selective and then we'll be back to square one, whatever that may be.

I sent in a cd-rom with a portfolio of my artwork in it, but that was only because art is one of my more significant ECs so I figured the colleges might as well see what I've been creating for the past 6 years LOL. Otherwise I wouldn't have made the effort.

If you're an athlete or are going for an art program, something visual is a great idea. Those items are sent to coaches and faculty to review. If you send a DVD or videos with a skit or something along those lines, it will probably get tossed aside and not get watched unless someone, probably a student worker, is bored. The chances of an admission officer having the time to watch a video at this time of year is small (I took a quick break to check email and here I am).

A few years ago, someone in China decided kids should have viewbooks. I don't know who it was or how the word spread, but colleges now get glossy, slick viewbooks from students in China. The amount of money being spent on this stuff is rediculous. All for something that will get a glance, at best, when we're sorting the mail.

We created our applications so that we will see the information we need to make a decision.

how about a music performance wit a group (such as orchestra?)??

yeah wel they say the number of students applyin to colleges will peak in the next 10 years, and then it will go back down......wish i was born either 50 years ago or 50 years later from now.

Maybe the colleges can abuse this to screen out ugly applicants.

I notice that classical voice applicants are having to send DVDs instead of audio CDs for recorded auditions for some places. My S, who is now a college sophomore, only needed CDs. My daughter, a high school junior and also a singer, is having to send DVDs for her auditions to summer programs. Does anyone know what is behind this change?

Also, what is the best way to produce an audition DVD?
