No mention of merit aid in the acceptance email. Does anyone know when we would be notified if we are awarded?
To say I am disgusted with this game of ED is an understatement!

Applied EA
Deferred now denied during RD
ACT 32
gpa 96.7 AP and honor classes as well as accelerated college
outstanding letters of rec
numerous EC and volunteerism
Work experience as
Lifeguard and camp counselor
Captain Mock Trial
several emails to rep as well as numerous visits
To expect legacies to apply ED is strongarming.
Not to mention the disgraceful graduation ceremony that took place last year after four years and 200K plus!
@mathlov so do you think your son was penalized because he is a legacy and didn’t apply ED but only applied EA? It does seem strange that he wasn’t admitted. So sorry for your son.
Yes, that’s exactly what I think! So disappointed!!!
@mathlov did he apply to the business school?
No, he applied to the liberal arts college
mathlov - I agree with you about ED (at all schools, not just Nova). Of course the schools love it because it gives them 100% yield for over half the incoming class. It also works for those kids who know where they want to go and know they can afford it because it gives them a boost. But for all the other applicants, it stinks because it makes getting in EA or RD much more difficult. Throw in the common app (which lets kids apply to tons of schools) and the admission rates are getting ridiculous for the non-ED rounds. Also, what happened at graduation ceremony last year?
TheBigChef- I couldn’t have said it better myself! The graduation was set to be outdoors and the weather predictions were for heavy rain, there were no alternate rain plans and the graduation (handing out of diplomas) was completely unorganized with hundreds of students and guests waiting in the student center to randomly take their name tag and walk across a 5 foot dais set up in a small ballroom with no seating or formal pomp and circumstance. It was a fire hazard, elderly grandparents who traveled great distances had nowhere to sit. To think that was the class that basically won them two national championships thereby increasing the applicant pool and lowering the acceptance rates is so disgraceful. They received millions of dollars and they should have tented the field or obtained a stadium as other schools do. Parents and alumni were outraged and the majority vowed never to donate again. This will most likely not even put a dent in the university as it was one class and applications will continue to pour in. Villanova has left a very sour taste in my mouth, to say the least.
I agree ED helps the school much more than the applicant. At the same time, schools have the right to decide how to consider legacy applicants in the context of the overall applicant pool. Many schools that have an ED program will only give a legacy applicant special consideration/ a thumb on the admissions scale, if the applicant takes advantage of the ED option.
DS deferred during EA but accepted yesterday. SAT 1450, 4.0 UW, no ranking at school, school only began AP’s senior year and seniors were only allowed to take 2, rest of classes all honors from freshman to senior. 2 college classes (A’s) SAT II English 760 and Am History 740. Strong EC’s. No idea about the LOR as he never saw them. Accepted to arts and sciences.
Yikes, sorry to hear about that graduation fiasco. Any reason they didn’t switch it to the basketball pavilion? Probably would have had to limit tickets but it would have been better than what actually occurred.
The pavilion was under construction which they knew and wasn’t going to be available… Even more of a reason that they should’ve had alternate plans, the pavilion is usually the alternate plan so this was definitely a problem on the school end. They clearly did not want to go for the money to plan for another venue for graduation.
How long after submitting the deposit do they reach out with information concerning rooming etc?
was admitted to the Honors Program a while back
and I recently received my financial aid package:
Direct Unsubsidized Loan: $2,000
Direct Subsidized Loan: $3,500
Federal Work Study: $3,000
PHEAA Grant: $3,233
Villanova Grant: $45,640
Family Financing Option (estimated cost to attend): $15,959
(Post #259 has my stats)
did the Villanova grant come as part of merit offered at admission or part of recent financial aid package?
@Lsregan the Villanova grant is need-based and may change as your need does year to year
Thanks!
