I’m a High School sophomore and I have been playing viola for 8 years. I started out playing in my elementary school orchestra and I started lesson in 6th grade. I didn’t really start taking music seriously until then end of 8th grade. I go to an arts highs school where I participate in Orchestra, Chamber Music and Chorus. I’m also in a Youth Orchestra outside of school and an additional quartet.
What does your teacher suggest? It’s not too early to begin this discussion. Knowing how serious you are and your college goals will be helpful to your teacher. The teacher is in the best position to know your abilities and what possibilities might be open to you in a few years.
Also, where did older students from your school and youth orchestra go to study viola as performance majors? This might give you some ideas - especially if you have an idea of how well the students played and where they were accepted.
