I have strongly considered applying to UVA next year and I have a question about the admission process. My parents are divorced, and I live out of Virginia. However my father resides in Virginia, and subsequently, by Virginia law, I am domiciled there as well. My question is then will I be treated as an in state student or an out of state student during the admissions process? I'm aware that I would get to go at the in state cost but I wasn't sure whether or not I was still considered a Virginia applicant.

You'll be treated as instate

IS applicant

actually it depends. i have the same situation. my dad is, luckily, the parent that claims me as a dependent on his taxes (just how the divorce worked out). im not positive if this is absolutely necessary though so dont feel like all is lost if this is not the case. i know one of the criterion is that the parent residing in VA must contribute 50% of your yearly expenses. all of my mumbo jumbo is poorly worded so visit this link: http://www.virginia.edu/undergradadmission/status.html

just so you know, i was admitted to JMU as an IS student. still waiting on UVA decision but their application for is status was worded with less force so hopefully ill be IS there too. if accepted....

This is a technical question that does have a right or wrong answer. None of us is qualified to answer it. Direct your question to the Office of Admissions.

Call and ask for the Office of Virginia Status.
