so here is the deal. I currently live OOS with my mom. My dad has been working in virginia for about 3 months now. Our house OOS is up for sale and my mom will be moving to virginia once its sold. However, i will stay OOS to finish my last year in high school because i need to finish the IB program and get my diploma and i also have all my extra-curriculars set. We came and visited UVA during spring break and talked to the person who decides instate/out of state status'. She said that i will be considered in state bc we can prove that virginia will be the place where we will live after we move out of our house.

If our house isnt sold by the time i apply to UVA, what address do i put on the app? Will the admissions officer be confused if they see that i am going to school and living OOS but i am applying in-state?

Probably not, because domicile is determined not only where you are physically present, but where your parents (primary supporters) live, work and pay tax. You could also possibly write something up to send in with your application that clarifies your situation.

I was going to try “moving” to VA on paper using my brother’s VA address so I would have the VA tuition rates, but it ultimately was not going to work because I was a dependent of my mother and she resided, worked and paid taxes in PA and I was not considered “independent”.

well i am also considered a dependent of my dad and mom and currently its my dad supporting both my mom and me while he is working in virginia

There are plenty of VA residents who have OOS addresses for one reason or another. No worries!

thanks dean J, just making sure so nothing surprising comes up during the application process.
