Are you in-state for VA? That will likely make a difference.

There was another thread asking for merit from VT and some other schools. Parents chimed in that their higher stats kids got NOTHING from VT in merit. Shocking.

BTW…rarely is merit based on superscores.

are you instate?

What do you want to do with Chem?

Here is the quote from a mom whose D had tippy-top stats and got nothing from VT

Carnegie Mellon
Virginia Tech
Rensselaer

Her stats: National Merit finalist, 2360 SAT (1 seating), 790 - 800 on 3 SAT2s, 7 AP tests - all 5, about 30 quarter units of college-level physics, chemistry, and math classes. She applied as a freshman, not a transfer. She took the college-level classes when she was in HS.

“Shocking.” I don’t see how it is really that shocking that a high stats kid didn’t get merit aid from VT. Virginia Tech has tons of very high stats applicants, particularly in engineering and from Northern Virginia. Virginia Tech is a very popular , sought after choice among many Virginia kids, as are UVa and Wm & Mary. More of Virginia Tech’s aid is need based. There is some merit and some departmental awards but a lot of that is pretty specific. Virginia Tech is not like Alabama in giving out tons of merit money to attract students. I don’t think CMU is known for giving much merit either so that is also no surprise.

I’m pretty shocked that the kid mom2 quoted above didn’t get merit at RPI (Rensselaer) – my boys have both had somewhat weaker stats than those quoted and both got decent merit there – and young women are in high demand at RPI. I have to wonder if that’s a true story and if so, what details were left out.

@‌sevmom

VT’s upper quartile is good, but not so high that merit shouldn’t be given for high stats.

Math 690+
Reading 650+

That’s a 1340 M+CR or an ACT 30+

Maybe it should…Bama’s upper quartile is an ACT 31+ ;)

BTW…VT accepts most of its applicants so it really isn’t that picky. 19,000 frosh applicants, 13,400 accepted.

Bama…31,000 applicants, 17,500 accepted. (I think VT would like these numbers.)

But Virginia Tech does not really need to worry about or court that many OOS students. Kids and their guidance counselors in Virginia tend to have a good idea of where a kid stands for admission. In other words, lots of kids would not apply because they know they are not good candidates for admission. The Virginia kids that do apply tend to have a decent shot at admission unless they or their guidance counselors are delusional. Even though Virginia Tech has a high acceptance rate, that can be misleading. There are very good students, and legacies, every year that get waitlisted or denied. One of my kids, in the top 25 % of SAT’ was intiallly waitlisted. Not uncommon for 1300 plus SAT legacy kids to be denied., which happened to a friend’s kid. My VT kid had kids from Rhode Island, Maryland, California, Maryland, South America , etc. on his freshman floor. A kid from Maryland we know is at VT now as his parents went there in architecture.

The OP now knows that VT isn’t a source for merit money, so her question is answered!

What is her intended career? medicine? If so, then she should go where she will be a top student. I see that she is looking at Vandy ED. If she is premed, going there isn’t a great choice. She will be a weaker premed there…likely get weeded out. And if she’s not a top student there, it will be harder to get great LORs for med school.

Nobody has said that Virginia Tech absolutely will not provide merit aid. It is limited and competitive.

The dynamics in some states are quite different than others-lots of kids in Virginia, California Michigan, North Carolina, , etc. can be dealing with quite a competition just to get accepted to their very good state schools. It gets harder all the time. in getting into good state schools like Penn State, Maryland, etc.
