Maybe some of you can help me out. I’m currently a junior at the University of Texas looking to study civil engineering. I found out on Monday that I was accepted to Virginia Tech for the fall semester, which allowed me to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
That is, until I got the final requirements sheet. I was taking a linear algebra course earlier in the semester that I took as pass/fail; I switched to a math major, realized that if I stayed at UT, I’d need to take it again since I was taking it pass/fail (keep in mind, I didn’t know I’d been accepted yet). So to free up time for me to focus on other final exams, and because it wasn’t doing me any favors to stay in the class, I dropped it about a week ago. I didn’t realized I’d been accepted to Tech yet, nor did I realize linear algebra was required for CE at Tech. I was just following the plan if I decided to stay at UT since I didn’t want to put too many eggs in one basket.
What’s more, I’m taking Physics II right now (equivalent to Phys 2306) and may end up with a C in the course. I’m doing fine in my other courses (A/B in differential equations, A in Intro to Civil Engineering); I’ve just really struggled all semester in Physics II. I’m mortified that my offer of admission will be rescinded, and this could be my last shot to be a civil engineer. Any advice?
EDIT: I will gladly take MATH 1114 over the summer online if need be; it’ll be difficult because I’ll be working a job in a different state, but I can make it work. Or, would I even be able to just take an examination and claim credit?

@hokiehopeful9 I accepted mine on Friday. The PID comes in the acceptance letter they send to the address you put down on your application

@vtesl2014 ohh okay, that makes sense. Thanks so much! How long did it take for that letter to come? Like a week or so after you got accepted I assume?

@jayung I’m not sure if linear algebra is a transfer requirement into the CoE, though it may be a requirement to enter the civil program. The best thing to do would be to contact an admissions adviser and inquire directly. Receiving a C or lower in Physics will likely have a significant impact on your offer, though. Good luck!

Hey guys! quick question,

It would be the best to take summer 2 for engineering courses? If I am not taking summer 2 session, then is it possible to graduate school in 3 years after transfer?

@hokiehopeful9 It came two days ago.

whats everybody doing about housing?

Hey guys I am a Biology major and I just finished the second half to organic chemistry. Unfortunately I got a C+ in it. My grades are fine in my other classes. Should I contact them?

So i got my final grade for english and I have a C in that class…
Im a business IT major. I read that they wont drop your admission unless
I have a grade lower than a C.
Should I be worried?

From what I gathered from the admission representative I e-mailed a C only matters if it is in a major specific class. I could be wrong, though. Like I said before I wouldn’t hesitate to make contact with someone in admissions and at least open the forum for discussion with them.

@jayung
I’m a freshman CS major and I’m in a very similar position. I took linear algebra earlier in the semester but I dropped during my schools add drop period because I knew I would have difficulty with it this semester. My schools linear algebra is a 200 level course which requires calc 2 as prerequisite while Tech’s is much more basic. The first week of class we already had to prove stuff.

After receiving my admissions letter and reading through it hit me. I immediately sent an email saying I would take Math 1114 over the summer there or online or something along with anything else to enter my major.

Also this website, http://www.eng.vt.edu/students/prospective/transferring lists linear algebra as a recommended course. I already had all of the minimum finished with AP credits as well as multivariable physics and engineering fundamentals finished my first semester with.a 3.7. It would suck if we lose our acceptance over one course which in my case would have been easier to take at Tech. I’ll post on here when I get a response from them.

I spoke to the admissions office on Thursday; they stated that dropping my linear algebra course would NOT affect their offer of admission. So hopefully you’re in the same boat!
However, they did say making a C in my Physics II class could have an impact on their offer. Which, I may ask them about that because, while it’s required for all engineers just to take, as a CE major I won’t need it except to fulfill the requirement of taking two physics courses. So what I mean by that is, I don’t need Physics II (i.e. electromagnetism, optics, etc.) as a prerequisite for any other courses. I don’t think that’ll be good enough to convince them not to rescind my admission, but it’s worth asking.

@jayung
That makes me feel a lot better! I’ll still wait for an official response to mine but looks like I might be fine. Just gotta make sure to ace finals and keep A’s and B’s. I hope you can pull through with physics and do the same.

Also about the whole C thing. What if you get a C+? Do pluses and minuses count?

I emailed admissions about this last Monday and its been a week with no response. Should I call them or wait for them to reply? I don’t to annoy them with multiple messages.

I emailed admissions about possibly having a B or C in my math class and this was what their response was

“All final transcripts are reviewed by the committee and any grade of a C or below are concerning and overall term GPA’s that fall below a 3.0 will result in the admissions offer being revoked. It will be up to the committee to decide if one course will change the decision.”

Anyone know when we hear back from the Honors Department at VT? Getting in will influence my decision on whether I attend.

I am curious, IAS117, about why the Honors program would influence your decision. Looking at their website, I don’t see anything significantly different from the normal student experience. There are some special course sections for Honors students at the freshman and sophomore levels, but not for juniors or seniors. You don’t need to be an Honors student to talk to professors or to do research projects.

@UmmOkay sorry for the extremely late response…it is more prestigious for graduate programs. just like honor societies in high school. you could have a 4.0 and not be in an honor society but people still join for the prestige. you get chords and stuff during graduation and you get a special honors diploma. I got into VT Honors and have decided to go there

I’m looking for someone to take my son’s contract at the Villages of Blacksburg, if anyone is interested. He decided after he got home this spring that he wanted to stay local (we’re from Mass).
