I want to study Medicine or Biomedical Engineering.

Virginia Tech is in-state for me. CWRU is private so it costs about 50K+ per year, but they apparently give a lot of money (I got off the waitlist so I don't even know if I'd still get money).

I will know A LOT of people at Virginia Tech so I'll feel right at home. I'll know absolutely NO one at Case so it will be tough. But ultimately I do recognize that the learning/career component is the most important part of college, so if Case is better career-wise, I'm willing to make a sacrifice.

I was thinking that if I went to Virginia Tech, I'd consider transferring to UVa after a year.
I was thinking the same for CWRU, except it would be a bit harder to maintain a solid GPA for that. I don't know if Case's difficulty is considered when Grad school evaluates GPAs.

Also at Virginia Tech I got University Honors with dorming. I think I was going to get Suite style dorms and that's a big deal to me because I don't like the idea of sharing a stall bathroom with 30 other guys. At Case how would it turn out to be? I hear there are apartment style dorms (where you'd share a bathroom with only a few others)?

So could someone tell me what I should go to in their opinion? Which school is better ranked, better viewed by jobs and grad schools (med school in particular), better for opportunities, more prestigious, etc? And if it's Case, is it worth the distance and lack of friends (initially of course)? I'd truly appreciate any input.

I think you should probably go to Virginia Tech, given the likely cost difference and the University Honors with better dorms (Case’s freshman dorms are NOT the apartment-style dorms). But, Case’s BME program is viewed very positively by employers, grad schools, etc. In the latest US News rankings, Case was 8th (it didn’t show VA Tech in the “free-to-see” lists), and for grad school BME programs, Case was 14th and VA Tech 39th. You’d probably do fine at either place - good luck!

“I got off the waitlist so I don’t even know if I’d still get money”

Until you find out your aid package, and run the numbers (here is one good calculator to use: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid) ) you won’t even know if Case is an option.

If you are serious about Med School, you should do your level best to get your undergrad for as little money as possible (and yes, that includes choosing a cheap dorm and a cheap meal plan and buying used textbooks and planning your travel so you don’t spend much money on that either) so that you have money left over for Med School - or at least so you take on as little debt as possible for your undergrad degree.

Talk the money issue over with your parents. How much are they ready, willing, and able to chip in each year? Will they be able to help out with the cost of Med School, or will you need to take on all of that expense yourself?

Yea I’ve spoken to them about the money issue. They really want me to go to Case. They say they’ll arrange for money and what not. If I were to get roughly 28K from Case should I go there over Vtech? There’s no question of going there over Tech if I ultimately get less than 15k.

Only you and your family know your budget. So wait until you see the numbers.

Did you run the Net Price Calculator at the CWRU website? That might give you a ball-park for the aid package.

They gave me nothing. I’m trying to see if I can talk to them some more and see if I can get anything.

“They gave me nothing.”

Kick Case to the curb and move on. VA Tech is a great institution. You can get a great education there.
