virus protection?

my boyfriend is going to UCLA and he told me that they give out free virus protection to its students so they dont have to buy any. He said there's this website that not many students know about that you can get it at. I was just wondering if UCR had anything like that because that would be great if they did. i dont want to pay to protect my laptop if i dont have to.

I am shocked that you aren’t aware of the free anti-virus, and free anti-malware programs. There are several free anti-virus/anti-malware programs available for download off the internet-Avira, AVG, Avast!, etc. If you are tech savvy or do some research you will realize that the free anti-virus/anti-malware programs are just as competitive and are as good as commercial ones-if not better. I’m curious as to what software UCLA gave its students. I hope it wasn’t McCafe.

I’m actually not tech savvy but I am aware that you can download free protection from other sources. i just don’t want to download someting crappy that won’t work. Plus, some viruses come disguised as virus protection. So i was just wondering if UCR had any recomendatons. i noticed they had one called Sophos or something like that but i had trouble downloading it.

btw i actually think McAfee is what UCLA gives but I’m NOT sure…

just download avast or avg or go to the microsoft site they have a few

“some viruses come disguised as virus protection.” That is only true when you download shady programs from questionable sites. The three best free anti-virus programs are: Avira, Avast!, AVG. I wouldn’t rely too much on UCR’s recommendations, because they don’t necessarily know what is the best products out there; I had a computer science professor recommend spyware search & destroy LOL.

I have used many anti-virus programs, including the above mentioned, and I personally prefer Avira. According to my knowledge Avira’s detection rate is slightly superior to that of Avast! and AVG’s and its number of false positives are fairly moderate.

McCafe is a poor performing anti-virus but I am not surprised if that is what UCLA gave its students, since a lot of crappy computer companies (ie. Dell) offer that as well. Also, Microsoft’s anti-virus is pathetic! It is like a slight upgrade from McCafe.

Best antivirus will be you yourself, there are some viruses/malware out there that not even a Norton business class will stop/detect

Your best anti virus is yourself. Don’t download illegal software. Don’t pirate music and videos. Don’t go to websites that aren’t “household names” or “professional/student/business/casual”.
