Visit to High School by Ivy League Football Coach

Hi Everyone,

Where does a visit from an Ivy Football coach to the recruit’s high school to talk with the recruit’s high school coach rank as far as that school’s interest? In this case, my son is only prospect from his high school being recruited. Given that this takes much more effort than a personal letter or call, I assume this is a very good sign, but I wanted to get feedback. Thanks.

I think you are reading it right. I have always judged recruiting interest by the level of effort expended by the coach.
In your son’s circumstance, particularly because he is the only guy being recruited at his school, I would take it as a sign of strong interest.

FWIW, I don’t believe my son received an offer from every school that visited him, but iirc they all recruited him hard. And that was at a high school where the coaches would regularly see multiple kids.

Thanks for the feedback!

If your son is currently a junior, I would highly recommend that he attend the summer camps of any Ivy schools he is interested in. These camps can carry a lot of weight if he is on their radar. In my son’s case we did the Ivy football camp circuit in the summer prior to his senior year. Two of the visits resulted in “offers” on the spot.

Thanks. Yes, we just finished up the Junior Day visits at the Ivies and we are attending 5 of the camps this summers.
The one thing that is a little frustrating is that because of schedules, we can’t attend them all. We have been trying to prioritize camps based on perceived interest.

I think five is plenty if you do the leg work (which it appears you are). The talent band in the Ivy is pretty narrow, and allowing for the normal variations based on offensive or defensive philosophy, someone who is athletically suitable for Dartmouth will also fit in well athletically at Penn.

So I would focus on the schools where there is more personal interest, and also where his athletic style and size fits with what is on the roster. Then see how it lays.

Thanks!

I would view it as a good sign but honestly I have no idea as to what level of interest it might signal to a prospective student/athlete. My S is also being recruited by many Ivy schools but nobody has visited his HS to this point(we are in nowhere FL lol) yet to his surprise and elation he did get visits, called out of class and hand written invitations from UF and UGA this past week. I took it as a genuine interest on their part fwiw. Best of luck to your S going forward in the recruiting process. Have fun with it.

Thanks. You too. I get the impression that the Ivies are hitting the road now. Another Ivy coach indicated he might be stopping by the school next week.

That’s great about UF and UGA!
