Count me in as someone who loves UCD. My husband's family all live there. My brother-in-law is a professor and dean of his dept, my SIL is head of another dept, most of husbands sibs graduated from there, so did MIL. We have been visiting Davis for 30 years and I think it's the perfect college town.

Husband and I lived on campus at UCI for 5 years while he got his PhD. It was OK, but I loved the general collegiate atmosphere at UCD much more. LAst summer my son went to summer session at UCI, I was struck by how sterile the campus is. His friends that attend UCI are all engineering and science majors, they do not like living in the city of Irvine. Son liked his UCI classes but did not like the surrounding area.

coureur - This is completely random, but I saw you mentioning Davis food, and I thought of this. Have you ever heard of a Japanese restaurant called Fuji's? I don't really know how new that place is, but my friends and I are obsessed with it. (I'm a senior living in Sacramento, and a lot of my friends are going to UCD while I trek all the way to Cal and the Bay.. heh.) Yeah. Like I said, completely random. XD

shinseki12 - Hahah! Totally! Only, my friends and I only go there for lunch because it's only $10 instead of $20, and it's still worth it. The waiting line sucks, though. Heh.

Davis is a wonderful town for students--a very cute downtown area that is accessible to and frequented by students. Much more of a student "hang-out" than Irvine or San Diego.

As for diversity, Davis used to be pretty left-leaning politically when I used to be there. Has that changed?

Yes, the Davis City Council voted it a nuclear free zone while I was there. I think it is something like a $500 fine for detonating any nuclear weapons within the city limits - which of course has the Russians and Chinese scared.
