Visited Georgetown today

This visit was mostly out of curiosity - son is not seeking urban setting. Must admit it didn't do much for me....maybe I was just aggravated by the DC traffic. If a kid desired a career in foreign service or international business this would be a great choice. But if not I'm not sure what Geogetown offers unless it is the excitement of the city. Did I miss the big picture?

My S is a sophomore at Georgetown and loves it, but I can understand not being impressed on your first visit. I don't know how you first approached the school, but if you came in via Prospect or M Street it isn't the best approach. If you walk in through the main gates (O St and 39th St ??) it is a much prettier first view with the main green, and Copley and Healey Halls right in front of you. I didn't enjoy the info session/tour that Georgetown gives - thought they came off very snooty and unwelcoming. Georgetown has a true campus within an urban environment - something that is not especially easy to find - and the Georgetown area of DC offers some great restaurants/shops and is just an all around fun place to be. Academics are very good - my S has had some wonderful professors who really seem to take an interest in the students. The school seems to have the work hard/play hard mentality he was looking for. Can't say he or I have regretted his decision to attend.

For political science, Georgetown is outstanding. I thought the central quad area was gorgeous, among the top three or so that we visited, but that wouldn't signify in terms of making a decision. If D had been absolutely certain she wanted to major in political science, she probably would have applied there. The academics seem to be tough and the proximity to Capitol Hill, the Washington Post, the CNN bureau, and the WH...not that my D's blue skin would stand her any chance of entry in the current regime...make it a vertiable buffet for those interested in politics and government.

As for the traffic, drive as little as possible. Cabs and the metro are the ticket.

I felt Penn for an urban school was more inviting....more of a campus feel. Agree that the G'town area would be fun for a kid.
