I signed up a while ago for the upcoming Sleeping Bag Weekend, though now I'm not really sure how it'll work. Basically, my parents won't be able to come with me due to work, which would be fine because I can just drive myself, but the problem is I live pretty far away so I'd have to drive up the day before and spend the night somewhere. Since I'm only 17 I can't get a hotel room by myself, and I'm not sure about where I'd legally be able to sleep in the car. I've heard a lot of conflicting reports about this kind of stuff, but has anyone actually gone through a situation like this? Should I just stay home?

Depending on where you live and how long it takes in travel time, you could leave the day of but just make sure you leave exactly on time, or there is always airfare.

What gender are you? I could possibly hook you up with one of my RA buddies in the freshman dorm and you could spend the night with them before the SBW starts, if you want. I am going to be hosting two female baggers myself, so I won’t have room unfortunately.

I’m about 7 hours away so I could just leave really early in the morning (registration is 10 to 11 I think), though that wouldn’t be ideal since I’ve never driven this far alone, much less sleep deprived haha. I actually heard from someone that some places allow a parent to sign a contract assuming liability for anything that happens due to the minor, though I’ve heard otherwise. I guess I’ll just call around.

completelykate, I’m male so I’m assuming I wouldn’t be able to. Thanks anyway though.

Well, the alternative is to drive to campus, purchase a parking ticket and park in the garage and sleep in your car there. That’s a safe place where you can be close to campus.

I guess that would be the most reasonable option, thanks.

I would contact the office of admissions and talk to them about your problem. I’m sure they’d be able to find some way to accommodate your needs. I imagine they wouldn’t want the possible liability issues of a 17 year old sleeping in their car on campus (especially if it’s cold out).
