Visiting Ann Arbor/University of Michigan

@sushiritto… I live in Chicago as you know. We have Rush, Northwestern, University of Illinois and University of Chicago hospital systems. I am sure Stanford is top notch. But like Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic people really do come from around the world to go to University of Michigan hospital systems
So for our kids bumps /bruises /colds /, flu/hangovers, etc they are in a good spot to be treated. If something was really truly serious, I couldn’t think of a better place for them to go to for medical care. Honestly.

@romns116. My son is new to North Campus. But the eateries were all a short walk across the streets and down the blocks from Northwoods apartments. Well, of course we drove but there were many places to go to for a meal. Think sushi, Indian, Thai, Chinese etc etc. When we were there we took him out to a brewery for hamburgers and a great local beer for me ;). It was a Sunday and packed.

There was fast food etc There is actually a pdf list that you can look up for North Campus but I can’t copy it.

There is also :https://uunions.umich.edu/pierpont/dining

They aren’t going hungry… Lol…

It’s just not in your face like Central Campus is.

Talking about Central campus.
Look up Kerrytown… It’s where Zingermans is.

FYI. Central campus itself really isn’t that big once your there. Kids tend to go to like one area. But the options are endless. In reality, well at least for my kid he ate mostly in the dorms. Once in a while he will go out for dinner for something different like Chinese. It’s not like their going out for sushi nightly. Their college students after all. The good thing is, is Michigan is actually one of the schools when visiting that he actually thought the food was decent. They do a nice job of variety.

I just realized North Quad Bldg is on Central Campus, not North Campus. No wonder I couldn’t find NQ in the NC map.

We have meetings in the Moore Bldg (LSA Music) and North Quad (FTVM) in a couple of weeks, so I tried to map our route and find potential eateries for our 1 hour in-between meetings.

Any quick (but delicious) burger places in-between these two locations?

I haven’t seen a ton of campuses around the country, certainly a bunch, but you’re absolutely correct here. For a big state school with 40,000+ students, Central Campus seems small to me and not all that crowded. Very compact in essentially one big rectangle. Sure, you have to cross a small bridge to get to The Hill and have to take a bus to North Campus, but essentially Ann Arbor seems extremely manageable from a walking perspective, of course, not when it’s -15 degrees like last week.

I run quite a bit and ran a few of the neighborhoods and seemed to run out of ideas of where to go next unless I was going to go run on the highway. Not that a student would need it, but Ann Arbor has a gorgeous relatively new 4-story YMCA that I use when in town. The students have the IM building and UMich is rebuilding the Central Campus Rec Center now too.

For great sushi/Japanese on Central Campus, go to Sadako on So. U. For great Korean BBQ, Tomukun on East Liberty. For very good Mongolian BBQ, bd’s on So. Main. I thought Zingerman’s was OK, but it seems I’m in the minority here/there.

Thought about eating here in-between meetings, but when I did the virtual drive (via google street view) Zingerman’s has a line wrapped around the bldg

Visit the Arboretuem while you are there. Not sure where Blimpie Burgers is in relations to where you’ll be.

The line at Zimgermans goes fast. Good corn beef and other sandwiches depending on what your used to.

Best part about Zingermans is going inside and getting cheese, cured meats, and fresh bread…and all the samples

I’m huge fan of Fred’s. A salmon bowl with veges and a brotein shake for me. =P~

On a student budget within a 10 min walk of Central - favorites to add : Jerusalem Garden for ME food. Chella’s for tacos. NeoPapalis for thin crust pizza, Frita Batidos for Cuban, Belly Deli for Asian sandwiches, Ray’s Red Hots, Franks for a diner

Check out the Hill Auditorium if there is an event.
