Visiting colleges

Hi, I’m a portuguese high school student and I’m going to the US this Spring to see some colleges. I am travelling with my parents and at some colleges they say that information sessions are for prospective students only. Dose that mean I should go with my parents and count them as attendees when registrating for that or that I should attend alone?

I suggest youu take your parents along. Having another persons input about the school is very helpful and since they will be footing the bill, their opinion should count also.

^ Agreed, totally do take your parents and register them as attendees.

When I was applying to college, I was very easily impressed by random things colleges liked to advertise. “We’re ranked #1 for food!” or “10% of our students are majoring in the same thing you’re interested in!” or …

Retrospectively, turns out that these things almost never meant what I thought they meant. I wish I had had critical adults with me who had helped me put the advertising messages into perspective. I had to learn these lessons the hard way - first hand, after enrolling.

“Yes, their food is ranked highly, but it’s only ranked highly because students answer on surveys that they think highly about the food, which they only say because the college keeps telling them it’s amazing compared to other college food. But in reality, the food is actually worse than at these other 5 colleges I have eaten at.”

Or, “Yes, math is actually the most popular major at this college. But that does not mean that many students like math or that the math program is particularly strong. It happens to be the most popular major because it’s the easiest major to get As in. I wish I had gone to a college with higher standards in their math major, even if that meant a smaller math program.”

Families were welcome at all the information sessions we attended (14). I guess it’s possible that some are restricted to students only, but that would be unusual. You could always email admissions to ask.
