Visiting Colleges

Well I'm a sophomore and I was just wondering how people visit colleges. For example, I hear of people visiting Harvard and stuff like with their family in elementary school and stuff. Well I'm going to be in the North East for a short holiday next month and was planning to visit a few famous colleges with my family.

So what can you do or what do people normal do when visiting if they are not applicants? Are tours still given out to families even if they may not be applying at the moment? Or do people usually just marvel at the architechture or something? Some of the bigger/richer universities seem to even have museums so are those also places that can usually be frequented by tourists/interested people?

So what am I supposed to do? Do I have to book a campus tour or do they run hourly or something? anyway, any advice woudl be appreciated

You should make a list of the colleges you would like to visit.
Next, call each one of the colleges and ask them about tours. Ask them what days they are on and what times they are at. Some colleges require you to pre-register (sign up in advance), so ask about that while you are on the phone. You will show up at the school, meet your tour guide(usually with a bunch of other prospective students), and the guide will show you the campus and answer any questions you have. Good luck!

Tours are generally directed towards people who haven't applied yet... The point of the tour is to make you want to apply to and attend that school. I don't think that there's any way the college would know (or care) that you're not a current senior... Lots of juniors and sophomores visit schools too.

Check the schools' websites to see tour schedules. You usually don't have to book them in advance, but it's always best to check. The only campus tour I ever had to book in advance was at NYU.

Sit in on a couple of information sessions too, if you get the chance... It's a good way to find out some specifics about the school (although the info sessions all sound the same after a while).

Also, remember to plan out the course of your visits ahead of time... Get Mapquest directions from one college to another. It sounds simple, but it really saves time.

i have visited harvard like 3 times ! its awesome there, but i dont think i want to go. do any of you know anyone who went to auburn & if they liked it?
