have u guys visited any college yet?? I've filled out a college survey on line about 2 or 3 months ago, and now a lot of colleges are sending my letters and asking me to go visit their colleges....so i would like to hear about the experiences u guys had....in the letter, they said i have to make up an appointment, and meet with the students and professors and blah blah blah....is it possible if I just go and look around the campus without an instructor, cuz i get real nervous.

umm, it's not really all that bad... your best bet is to find groups of colleges that are near each other and plan a trip that way.

and it's not nervewracking at ALL, lol. usually the college websites have time/dates of their school tours and info sessions, so check those out. you CAN just visit the campus and walk around, nobody will kick you out or anything, but IMO it's better to follow a tour guide who knows just about everything about the school :) some college websites even have a scheduler that you sign up with for a certain time...

it's better because once you get there, they give you a little card to fill out with your name, address, info - and they'll know you actually spend the time to visit the school, ie. showing interest.

I was really nervous before starting my college visits, but they really aren't bad at all. you can just call the admissions office and schedule the visit. try to get a tour, interview, sit in on a class... overnight if possible, but if you're too nervous it's not nessecary.

The tours are usually very low-key. The only thing that really bothered me was how one tour guide was identifying us by our outstanding ECs- "Oh.. you started a dance program for inner city kids.... you're the amazing cheerleader... and you.. erh..." points to me "... you're a senior." I was like... heh, yes, I am a senior. Thanks. XD

But if you don't want to take the tour or don't have time for one, you can usually just pick up a map in the admissions office and go around yourself. My dad and I did that at one college, much to my embarassment, and found that every single door to every building we wanted to see (with the exception of the dorms) was unlocked and our prescense was not minded. I personally felt like a bit of a spy/secret agent/stalker, but my dad had no problem interrogating a psych student that we found in a dark computer lab. x.x

Basically... college visits are whatever you want them to be. ^^ Nobody is going to push you into a tour if you don't want to go on one, but you'd probably get more information that way.

thx everyone, these informations are really helpful....i think i will try to visit some colleges ;)

so when is the best time visit them?

I visited during my school's April vacation last year, so the weather was nice, and there were still students on campus. The thing about visiting during the summer (if summer tours are available) is that you don't get a real feel of the campus with most of the students gone.

it really is a lot better if you can do it when there are students around. I did a couple over breaks, and you just can't get a good feel for the campus.

So, when do most colleges end class for the summer? When do most students finish finals and leave campus?

jump!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have gone on a lot of tours so far. I usually go to the information session, then the tour, and lastly if I have time I always talk to students on campus to get another prospective of the campus.
