My essays probably got me into UVa…just sayin…

I have no idea how I got into UVA!! I was deferred!! Miracle magic in RD clearly…

I guess your a lucky kid Hazel… lol. Anyways I’m not quite sure about one essay. I had to write an essay for Michigan about diversity and it was about how food demonstrates diversity. I really liked the essay because it was out of the blue and I love food. Anyways I’m really trying to write a great essay for UVA. I’m hoping to get into a school EA (UNC, Georgetown or Univeristy of Michigan) and then I will focus only on my app for UVA for RD. I’m a pretty good writer and a funny guy but I love to be satiricle (sorry for the horrible grammer, this is one of my weaker points) but often I’m so satiricle that it’s almost like a funny rant. Anyways, Dean J, I know that visiting is important. I mean going to visit Duke I thought it was definitly the school for me if I didn’t get into UVA. Once I visited the school I didn’t like the campus or even the information tour.

Also, in response to the demonstrated interest, Dean J, should I some how incorporate into my essay that UVA is my #1 choice and that I will attend if admited. For some reason I have in the back of my head that I read a thread on here about a kid who was admited because on his essay and his guide counclors reccomendation he made sure that the admissions councler reading his essay knew he wanted to go to the school. I know you know how I feel about the school but I want to show the other Adcoms also.

And in response to Robertjr about writing the book, in the spring when all of this is over I’m going to post a page long thread about this whole college process.

FYI UVaOrBust, Dean J may be at the point that, ethically, she wouldn’t read your essays. So…why you tryin so hard dude?? Apparently you missed everyone’s posts about taking a step back before you give yourself a heart attack…

Lol I know shoebox, the chances of her reading my essay are slim but I got a pm from someone who just got accepted and they told me to make sure to show the Adcom reading your essay that you will attend the school if accepted.

Also shoebox you said your essays are probably what got you in. Would you mind telling me what you wrote about? And atleast after visiting all these other colleges I know I would be happy somewhere else but I’m still shooting for UVA.

My situation was different and my essays were unique and from my heart. I was at a school I was happy at, but I saw UVa as a better academic match, not just wanting to go there because it was pretty and a dream. I felt I could be a better contributor to society there…now that I’ve graduated, I suppose it’s time to reflect on that assumption :)

UVAorBust…I hope you are taking thorough notes on your likes/dislikes while on these trips; this information will be critical to you in formulating your final list. For example, you had mentioned that one of the things you disliked about Duke was the “run down” area surrounding the campus. Durham has a very urban/inner-city feel; consequently, you needent waste your time visiting schools like Hopkins, U of Chicago, etc. My D felt the same way about Yale’s campus as you did about Duke. (New Haven was too sketchy for her.) Thus, she didn’t waste her time visiting Duke because she knew the area surrounding the campus was similar. You mentioned one of the things you liked about UNC was the grounds. If you find this alluring, you needn’t look at schools like BU, NYU, etc. because they lack the sprawling grounds. Instead, look at Vanderbilt or SMU maybe. (You said you liked southern schools.) Obviously you need to make certain each school you’re considering is tops in business (I think that’s what you want to study), but these tangibles (grounds, urban v. rural v. suburban) are what help you narrow your scope. Lastly, do you plan on re-visiting UVA? Didn’t you say you hadn’t seen it since middle school? If this is the case, you DEFINITELY need to see it again with an OPEN mind. My D visited Dartmouth during the summer before 9th grade and was determined to apply ED. Her father and I were concerned it might not be the best fit for her and made her re-visit during the winter (smart idea) of her junior year when students were on campus (another smart idea). She still applied, but it was definitely no longer at the top of her list.

UVAorBust,

What are your safety schools? UVA is a tough admit. Just don’t want to see you go bust…

Shoe is right. I won’t first read the application of someone I know. I actually got a few minutes into her app before I realized whose app I was reading and had it redistributed. :)

No. The essay is not about pleasing us. Essays that talk about how much people love us/Charlottesville/Thomas Jefferson aren’t very interesting to read. We know this place is great. We’re already here. We want to get a sense of who you are from your essays.

Ohh I know Dean J not to give the classic “UVA is awsome because it has good teachers”. For sure I will not give a Mc’essay but I mean I’m sure the Adcoms get many apps from kids who are just applying to apply, whether they want to go there or not. Thats one thing that I think is bad about moving away from ED. Its harder for the Adcoms to not decide who really wants to go to the school and who is just applying just to see if they get in.

In response to Dudedad, I definitly am applying to 2 safteys that I’m almost definite I will get into. And jc40, the reason I want to go to UVA is not because of the beautiful campus or petty reasons like that. I actually felt like I was part of a community when I visited UVA. When I visited I was so welcomed. I recognized this in middle school the feeling was so strong. Yes I do like the amazing campus UVA has to offer, but my desire to go to the school is much more than that.

After taking the train ride to my internship I got around to thinking. Dean J, after I’m denied or accepted would you read my essay. To be honest you, shoebox, hazelorb, blueiguana, and jc40 have basically become my guidence councler, who unfortunantly could careless what happens about where I go to college. My essay is out of the blue and is about diversity but shown through a metaphor.
Anyways, thanks for the continious help guys. I really do not have much guidence from my guidence councler and my parents think the best school that I’m going to get into is FSU… go figure…

UoB,
Sent a PM… honored to be mentioned in above company! Simply someone who does care. I am quite sure there are more than you know.
BI

UVAorBust, have you decided whether or not you are going to revisit UVA?
I think I am going to visit this weekend or next. Much easier for me to make the trip though, being in-state.
I’m going to do a Friday tour and spend the night at my friend’s house. This friend is going into her junior year at UVA, and I’m really hoping to get a good taste of the people at UVA.
If you have any currently attending friends, I’ve heard many people advise that you either go out with them or spend the night with them after the tour.

If I was your “mentor”, you would semi-listen to what I say. Instead, you’re so spun up about UVa that you’re on here daily, stressing yourself out. There’s more to life than work and school. Find some passion outside of school and work (and outside of UVA!!!) and then let school and work fall into line with it. You’ll have such a sense of direction, your school, major, possible job, whatever, will all seem like that perfect dream.

^^Ditto that.

Dean J, have you tried LA’s Sprinkles cupcakes? They are the real deal, I am telling you! Infinitely better than Georgetown cupcakes.

OPENING FALL, 2010

Yep! Tried them in Palo Alto. I think Kara’s Cupcakes at Fisherman’s Warf in SF are the best filled cupcakes I’ve ever had. Best non-filled would be Cappallino’s on the mall. Best old school cupcakes would be at Foods of All Nations. :)

Do define! When I think old school cupcakes, I think little funfetti ones with lemon icing dyed purple and blue, neatly arranged on a platter and accompanying me to second grade for my birthday treat. sigh

funfetti is amazing, haha
