Visiting ISU this summer

@sally305: I was going to post a visit report for both Iowa and ISU in a couple days. Honestly, our initial impressions of UIowa were not very good. We left the ISU open house and drove straight to Iowa City. It was raining and we were exhausted but we went out for a quick walk around UI campus from our hotel at the Ped Mall. It (the Ped Mall) was dirty, full of litter and we did not feel very safe. In fact, my D asked if we could skip the tour. I told her we had come a long way and that we should keep an open mind and do the tour the next day.

I am glad we did. UIowa shows much better during the day and our info session, tour, meetings with Admissions Counselor and different faculty went very well. My D was very impressed with the academic offerings and quality of UI. They have more majors of interest to my D. While she was impressed with the academics of the school, I don’t think she liked the campus layout and prefers a more traditional campus like ISU. She likes “boundaries”, knowing where the campus starts at ends. (if that makes sense). That being said, she applied to UI and we should hear some news tomorrow. I think she is on the cusp of acceptance/deferral. Sometimes my D will dismiss something that she thinks she can not achieve. If she doesn’t apply to UI, they can’t say no. It will be interesting to see her feelings if she is accepted. I still think she felt more comfortable at ISU but I left impressed by UIowa. If she could find a college with UIowa’s course offerings (Social work, Dance, etc) in a more tradtional campus environment, she would be in heaven.

Thanks! I had not considered having my daughter look into ISU until I read your posts. We have toured Iowa and really liked it. I know what you mean about the campus not being defined by concrete boundaries–in that regard it is a lot like a smaller version of UW-Madison, with which we are much more familiar.

I am looking forward to your visit reports. I’d recommend typing them in Word and then pasting them in. I lost a couple last year because I got logged out before completing them. Not sure the site still does that, but it is a pain if it does.

whew. I thought I was the only one who had that happen on posting college visits. I just gave up.

I just posted my visit report to ISU. I hope it is helpful.
