Accepted_ Iowa State_ 2011 Housing questions

D1 was accepted to ISU early on and after visiting the campus, ISU went from being a "safety" to top choice in her opinion. (Now it's between ISU and Univ of Minn-TC).

We did the brief campus tour thing but i'd like to know which dorms are better. We toured Friley and had lunch at MLW (Richardson ct). Campus seems pretty spread out, not sure how the walking thing in the winter would work out....

Any feedback would be great.....Prefers community bath, lofted beds and not a drinker/smoker and not really a party person but she's into sports (tennis team/swimming)...

What's the deal on Maple,Larch and Willow or Friley /Helser?? What would you recommend for 1st year female?

100 years ago, I lived in Maple–which was new, and my best friend lived in Friley. Friley had some interesting rooms because the building is older. I lived in Maple two years and then moved to a house that was fairly close to Friley for my last two years. I do remember scheduling classes on one side of campus one winter quarter (now ISU is on semesters), so that I would not have to walk across central campus in the really cold weather.

Friley is closer to the main part of campus and the campus town area and bookstores, but I think there are now shuttle buses that run around campus.

Go Cyclones!

How exciting for your D! Visiting Iowa State made all the difference for our family too. Our D is a first year and lives in Martin, in a learning community and loves it. She does have to make her way across campus in the cold weather. CyRide and a good winter wear helps the situation.

Well it sort of depends on what your major is. DD is a freshman there now, and lives in Oak. It is an older dorm but the rooms are bigger and the closet is huge! This dorm is an all girl dorm (we decided very late to attend Iowa State) so it was not her first pick, but the other dorms right around here in Richardson Court are older dorms with big rooms and nice closets. M, W, L is also a good dorm…right accross the street from Oak and the other dorms.

DD is an Athletic Training major so most of her classes are right across the tennis court. Plus it is right across the street from the health and fitness center.

If she is considering going Greek, it is a short walk to Greek Land from this area.

I know most girls don’t want to be in an all girl dorm their freshman year…and trust me she was upset about it when we received the notice. BUT my DD is now recommending that her younger sister live here her freshman year since there were a lot of pluses. Those being: Quiet at night, a minimum of partying in nearby rooms since everyone pretty much goes to other places on the weekend. Clean! Less stress w/ the shower/bathroom situation. Size of room, size of closet. Easier to develp relationships with girls without the whole ‘dormcest’ thing going on. On the minus side, it did take her a little to develop friendships with some of the guys but she has and it has been really positive.

Not trying to convince anyone, but thought I’d let you know. These smaller dorms in Richardson (some are coed too) are really overlooked and very nice.

BTW: congrats on your decision! DD LOVES it at Iowa State! Everything from classes and contact with professors, to Greek, to Campus town and the sports. I loved the price!

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I got a ton of help from this forum and I’d like to pay it forward.

Congrats. I suggested to my son to apply to ISU as a backup. Wouldn’t you know after the first visit he was hooked and hasn’t regretted it. He’s a sophomore ChemE major. ISU has opened up some great opportunities for him. Good luck with your decision.

I visited a few weeks ago, and I thought the Maple/Willow/Larch complex was really nice. The Union Drive area was okay too, but not quite as modern IMO.

It really depends on her major. If it’s anything in engineering, design, or sciences, go for Friley, Helser, Martin, or Eaton (on the West side of campus).
If it’s in the College of Business or Kinesology or Ag, go for the East side.

I don’t recommend Maple/Willow/Larch unless she’s a partier!

From your description, it sounds like Friley would be the best, in the houses Murphy, O’Bryan, Pennell, or Palmer, in my opinion.

I’m a current student here, you can email me at cassidoo [at] iastate [dot] edu if you have any questions!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. D1 majoring in Environmental Science so for her freshman yr., not sure where the majority of her classes will be.

She did look into one of the LC’s WISE which is in Friley Hall… most of the feedback we received from housing indicated Friley is pretty popular so there’s a chance she wouldn’t be assigned there. (confirmed housing in late Feb). so we’ll have to wait and see…

I know where the WiSE learning communities are in Friley, those are really good floors, nice rooms and people!

When you sign up for housing with a learning community, you get preference!
