I’m 20 and currently sophomore in college. There are times when I usually get to see some of my former teachers and students. These opportunities usually involve me volunteering with my former high school band (my mom signed me up to be a helper when I’m on break for college) and going to any of my former schools with my family for various reasons, etc.
Some people like it they see me come back, but others say that I should focus more on my new life after high school. IMO, I don’t see any harm with coming back to visit and helping out at my high school’s band camp. The band parents and I always prepare lunch for band camp.
So, should I continue to “come back and visit” or “focus on my new life”?
Do whatever you feel makes you happiest. I think that its great that you are dedicated to your community and have kept connections with people from your past; that being said, your focus on the past cannot come at a detriment to your progress. As long as you feel comfortable with your current growth and your HS activities are adding to your experience (as opposed to holding you back from new opportunities), then you don’t have anything to worry about.
If you’re volunteering as a service, then I think it’s very generous of you.
If it’s because you don’t feel as comfortable in your new life as your old, you may want to start weaning yourself away from your former schools.
I’m always happy to see former students. I saw one Friday night at the Christmas concert-- she is finishing up her nursing degree, and I currently teach her youngest brother. It was delightful seeing her again.
