I have some business to attend not far from Otterbein, so I am taking my daughter (applying for fall 2012) with me. I thought it would be a good opportunity to see the campus and area.

Unfortunately, I heard back from the department that they are dark until Jan 30th. I’m still taking my daughter, but we’ll just have to explore the area on our own.

Can anyone who knows the area and school recommend any areas or places we should definitely explore?

If you haven’t had the trip yet, perhaps I can help a little. I can’t recommend much in particular, but if you PM me your email address I’ll send you a couple of campus maps I have. We live in the area and two of my kids have attended summer strings camps at Otterbein, stayed overnight in the dorms, etc. Might help you look around on your own. The campus is fairly small (in a good way) and easy to walk around once you park your car.

Westerville has plenty of shops, restaurants, etc. right around campus and a few blocks down on State Street. You might also visit the Easton shopping district a few miles away from school. It has pretty much any retailer you can think of in a very nice outdoor setting and some shops housed in interior mall sections. Have fun! It’s a wonderful school and town.

We will be in the Columbus area around June 26-28. Will the campus be open for tours? Does the tour include seeing the theater and dance department? Thank you for any information.

You might contact the admissions department directly. I know years ago they ran tours throughout the summer and, hopefully, still do. We saw the large theatre then, but not the dance studios. I’m sure if you mention your interest they will try to accommodate you. I’m not sure of their summer theatre calendar this year, but you might look into the production dates or rehearsaltimes. When we visited years ago, we managed to see a show and it made for a great visit since there were current students in the summer theatre show. Enjoy your visit!

Their summer theater season will be putting up Annie Baker’s “Circle Mirror Transformation” that weekend–you should try to catch it! There’s a show the 28th. Check the website.
My son and I turned up at Otterbein during his sophomore year spring break, unplanned and unannounced, just to grab a viewbook from admissions and look around…he ended up having a wonderful interview with the arts admissions coordinator, Teri Devlin, and a great tour of the campus, complete with lunch. I expect they will do whatever they can to help you see the facilities. Having been through the process twice already, including visits to at least two dozen schools with my older kids, I can honestly say that Otterbein’s admissions staff is the most helpful, informative, and accommodating I have ever seen (sorry if I sound like a commercial!). Have a great visit!

Thanks everyone. I made an appointment online. Looking forward to see the campus. I have family that live in Ohio and had a cousin and a brother in law that graduated from Otterbein.

I hope you will be able to see the show. If you want to, I would suggest letting Teri Devlin know, and maybe tickets could be obtained that way. There are current students around, doing that show and also rehearsing the musical for July. So I bet your student could spend some time with some of them to get a feel for the campus, even though classes are not in session.
Have fun, and go down to Graeter’s for some ice cream!

Thank you MTmomma. We probably won’t be able to go to the show. We have to head back to Texas. We will definitely go to Graeter’s for ice cream. Can’t wait to see the campus

We had a great visit. We met with Teri and she talked to us about admissions. We then met with Dr. John. He showed us Cowan Hall. What a nice looking theatre. We then went on the tour of the campus. Everyone was so nice and polite. It was a great experience.

We also found out a lot of information about the curriculum. It was very helpful to know what type of classes they will be taking.

Glad you had a nice visit HNHDAD!
Sounds like your timing missed that big storm Friday night. It caused some major issues with power on campus and they had to cancel the rest of Circle Mirror Transformation because of it.
Best wishes as you go through this crazy audition process!
