I’m visiting Barnard on Wednesday. I’m doing a tour and an info session…does anyone have any other recommendations as to what I should do?

Students don’t return to campus until the middle of the month, so there won’t be classes to attend and such, unfortunately. You can and should get a feel for the area around campus and of course walk a bit on Columbia’s campus across the street, since that would be part and parcel of your college experience at Barnard. The Morningside Heights neighborhood is interesting and lovely, and there are quirky shops and restaurants all around…

have fun!

I’d suggest eating at the dining halls, but they’re probably closed. Definitely check out Columbia though!

churchmusicmom is right, it’ll be pretty devoid of students, but do walk around and get a feel for Columbia and the rest of the neighborhood as well. Maybe walk over to Riverside Park and take a look at the river. There’s a great place you can get crepes/breakfast/lunch over on Amsterdam by St. John the Divine (the REALLY BIG gorgeous church). Look in the grocery stores too (Westside Market is good—down on 111th I think). Have fun!

Appletree Market is also a fun place and is right next door to Plimpton Hall, one of the Barnard dorms. These are both on Amsterdam at 119th, I think… Well, I do know if you walk across Columbia’s campus from Barnard and go out the Amsterdam gate, turn left and walk under the overpass and down the hill…you will see several establishments including Appletree and then Plimpton…

It’s cold right now, so the best advice I have is to layer up on your clothing. As far as recommendations, how long are you in town and where are you visiting from? Barnard is conveniently located to the 1 subway–which will take you to Columbus Circle, Times Square, Wall St., and the Staten Island Ferry.

thank you! I had a great visit…hopefully I’ll be there next fall!
