Visiting

Quick question: I'm planning to visit cornell. Do they allow you to sit in classes? or walk around campus or is it just like an hour or two hour tour and you go home?

What college do you plan to apply to?

Cornell has a general campus tour and a tour of North Campus. If you've never been to Cornell before I recommend you go on the general campus tour. You can also walk around and explore on your own...check out the libraries, campus store and dining halls.

As for sitting in on classes: it seems that many freshman level courses meet Mon/Wed/Fri (at least this is my observation). CALS has a list of courses that you can sit in on. If you're looking at another college call their admissions office to see if they can help you out.

The prof probably won't mind you being there if it's a large intro class. If the course is a smaller one you might want to make contact to give them a heads up.

i dont know when you are planning on visiting, but i would go in the fall. there is nothing really going on now during the summer as far as classes go...

Make sure you see North Campus. I took the general tour, which was fine and have been to Cornell a number of other times, but my only memory of North is from a reunion years ago. It would be nice to know where I will be living next year (or where you will be living as a prospective freshman).

Otherwise I don't know if you need the tour. I never really learned anything from them. My advice would be to walk around campus and collegetown without your parents so that you can blend in, and maybe attend a class if you can. You will get a good feel for how you fit in as opposed to doing a tour with your parents asking questions and whatnot.
