Hi, I am a parent who will be in Waltham for business and wanted to pop over to see Brandeis. Won’t have time for a real tour, but would like to walk around. Where should I start and what should I make sure to see? Assume I have an hour or two to walk around. Thanks.

I have also heard not-so-good things about the campus – true? not true?

What particular concerns have you hard about the campus? What kinds of things are your son or daughter interested in? That way it will be easier to give perhaps more specific recommendations.

Aesthetically, the campus doesn’t compare to some other schools in the area - like Boston College, Northeastern. But it’s pretty easy to navigate.

That’s really the only complaint about the campus. At least from me.

My D is a sophomore this year, so I’ve seen enough of the campus to get a feeling for it.

The surrounding area is fine, with the nicer sections towards the center of town. I don’t worry about her walking around in the evening.

The campus itself is bi-modal. The renovated or new buildings are wonderful. The older ones are showing their age. I have been responsible for facility maintenance in the past, and I take great issue with how Brandeis treats some of the older spaces on campus. There’s a fair amount of “needs scraping and a coat of paint” everywhere you look. Now, granted, it’s easier to get someone to donate $1,000,000 for a new named space than it is to get $100,000 for paint and plaster repair, but I do think parts of the campus are run down.

Overall, things could be much worse. On average, it’s fine. However, that average is a mix of great as well as poor.

If you’re going to be on campus, but don’t have time for a tour, you could still feel free to stop by the admissions office. We can give you a campus map, as well as other Brandeis materials you could bring back home.
