Visual art and architecture

Hi! I'm interested in the art and architecture programs at Yale. I am unable to visit campus at this time but was hoping to learn a bit more about the school. Could anyone please answer some questions I have about the school?

Academics
• How would you describe your professors?
• How much time do you spend doing homework during an average week?
• How many students transfer to another school during or after their first year?
• Are there any clubs associated with your major?

Campus and Student Life
• How would you describe the day-to-day student life?
• What are you involved in outside of classes? How much time do these activities take?
How hard is it to balance these activities with schoolwork?
• What are the major campus issues?
• How would you describe the relationship between the students and the surrounding community?
• Do you live on-campus? If so, how would you describe the dorms?

Personal opinion.
• What are the best reasons to go to this college?
• What do you do on weekends?
• What do you love about this college?
• If you had to select a college from the start, would you make the same choice?

Thanks!! [:

You’re asking a lot but I’ll try to be generous (I am no longer a student but an alumnus):

Academics
• How would you describe your professors? Some excellent, some not – but they had to do something to get to Yale, no?

• How much time do you spend doing homework during an average week? All students are dedicated. 15-20 hrs of outside reading/homework/assignments? Just a guess.

• How many students transfer to another school during or after their first year? About 97% of students return for 2nd year.

• Are there any clubs associated with your major? Clubs for everything under the sun. If not you and some fellow students can easily start one. Yale is completely full of student leaders.

Yale seems to pick people who are good at balancing them. There certainly are many many draws to your time – which is a good thing.

• What are the major campus issues? Go to [Yale Daily News - The Nation’s Oldest College Daily](http://www.yaledailynews.com) and get a feel.

• How would you describe the relationship between the students and the surrounding community?

About half do some voluntarism. Certainly there are kids who come from areas where the proximity with an urban setting is a shock but seriously, they need to get a grip.

• Do you live on-campus? If so, how would you describe the dorms? Very few undergrads live off campus (maybe 10-15%). Because the dorms are some of the best extant.

Personal opinion.
• What are the best reasons to go to this college? Residential college system, camaraderie and real love of the college by students. Great academics and cultural opportunities. Great connections if you pursue them.

• What do you do on weekends? Parties, visit NYC or Boston, go to recitals, sports events, study, dates, nothing.

• What do you love about this college? See two answers above.

• If you had to select a college from the start, would you make the same choice? No doubt.
