I would like to know how many students apply to viterbi each year and how many get in. Their stats would also be appreciated!!!

Bump!! 10char

Can anyone give me a relevant answer???

Sorry, no. That information isn’t made public. You might try calling Viterbi admissions and asking. If you get an answer, please post it here.

After a brief search through some of Viterbi’s publications I was able to discover some information regarding the freshmen class that entered in fall of 2012. The only application number I was able to find was 10,300 students applied for places in the M.S. program.

Here are some bits of information about the freshmen who enrolled in the class entering in fall 2012: (latest I could find)

National Merit Scholars Enrolled----60

Percentage of University Scholars Enrolled----34%

Number of Countries Represented in Freshmen Class----14

Females As a Percentage of Class----38%

This is only a GUESS. My guess is around 8500 applied for the Viterbi freshmen class which entered in fall 2013. Perhaps someone from the school has a more accurate number. If so, I hope it will be posted here.

The largest number of freshmen are enrolled in Dornsife at 26%. Marshall is next at 21%.

Thank you so much Georgia Girl.

We were at the President Scholarship Viterbi meeting. There are 10,000 applicants and 410 are selected. That is a 4.1% admit rate. My S admitted to BME (biochemical) @ viterbi

Can that be right? That sounds too low to me. Viterbi has 2000+ undergrads (according to the website), so that would mean a class of about 500 for each of the 4 years. How can they have a class of 500 if they only admit 410?
Maybe 410 interviewed for scholarships? But that sounds too high. OTOH, people have said there were “a lot” of Viterbi admits at the scholarship interviews. To get a class of 500 I would think they would have to admit 1000 or so, which would be a 10% admit rate. (Maybe 410 actually go? 41% yield?)

Yeah the 410 is too low

I stand corrected. 410 seats to be filled. I was there. It was shown in a power point presentation. It said 50,000+ applicants to USC, 10,000 applicants to Viterbi for 410 seat. As stated, admit rates are higher. The day we were there thee were about 50 candidates for Viterbi Presidential.

We attended an Engineering Admission session last month. The head stated that they have received over 10,000 applications this year and plan to accept 1,200 to 1,500 students.

Thanks seattle_mom. That would mean about 12-15% acceptance rate for Viterbi and that they expect about 30% yield.

The American Association for Engineering Education has a website for engineering schools at

http://profiles.asee.org/profiles

You can search by year and school for undergraduate and graduate student data separately. Data is included for undergraduate applicants (number applicants, number accepted, number enrolled and test scores) as well as good data on the size of the engineering school and the distribution across the majors offered. I believe the data is updated each summer so the latest is for the year ending in the summer of 2013.

According to this @GeogiaGirls’ estimate was amazingly close for 2012 applicants. This site indicates about 1800/year admitted rather than ~1500 but that is for the entire year so may include kids who transfer in during the year, although the enrollment numbers specifically state fall enrollment.

Would transferring into Viterbi (from Dornsife) be as selective? Or is it just having the required courses & GPA…

Thank you, STEMFamily,

One thing I would like to add is Viterbi has about 38% women in the freshmen class. The average for engineering schools I read is about 18%. Viterbi also supports inclusion by having an ethnically diverse student body and faculty.

Keep in mind the school will benefit from the huge gift to fund the new state of the art bioscience/engineering complex. This will be interdisciplinary and draw even more top research talent to join the Viterbi faculty.

My brother is a proud graduate of the engineering school in civil engineering and is a registered engineer.

DARPA awarded USC more contracts than any other university in the nation.

The faculty has won a long list of awards. Technology Review has listed eight young faculty in their “Top 35 Innovators under 35”. They are:

Dr. A. Armani
Dr. J. Barbic
Dr. B Becerik-Gerber
Dr. H. Li
Dr. B. Krishnamachari
Dr. M. Mataric
Dr. E. Meng
Dr. M. Povinelli

FWIW, my D was in that enrolling class of 2012 as a Presidential Scholar. She is now living in an apartment with three female Viterbi roommates and has worked for Dr. Mataric in her robotics lab (way cool stuff!). So yes, there has been a healthy amount of women in Viterbi and they seem to work together well in school. She absolutely LOVES USC!
