VMI/Citadel

My son is starting senior year in high school next week. He has had an interest in Military since he was five. He spent an overnight with cadets at VMI last spring and came out of it saying: "I should go here because I need the discipline." His GPA went down junior year due to the fact that he simply didnt stay focused or do homework. We were concerned and found that our doctor diagnosed him with ADD. Also, the fact that his grandmother died, and his wings were spread with a drivers license are factors that had a negative influence as well. Does anyone know if it is wise to acknowledge this on apps?
Also, he dropped from a 2.9 to a 2.8. He has been on drumline and marched all of high school and quite dedicated to it. What are his odds for these schools with these credentials. He constantly spends any free time watching the Military Channel or Military movies. There is a sort of passion there.

I just don't seem to find anyone that wants to discuss this sort of student. Everyone seems to says that there kid is 3.0 plus. I don't get it. Help!

I’m not entirely sure. Maybe don’t- you don’t want to have it look like he is making excuses. Someone wiser than me can weigh in better, though. 62% of VMI’s students are in state, so that could work in his favor.

As far as everyone saying that their kids GPA is over 3.0 - welcome to CC, the internet land of overachievers. :)

ADD and grandmother dying are valid reasons. Driver’s lisence is not.

Citadel and VMI are not overly difficult schools to get into. Assuming he gets decent test scores he should be in at both.
