Hi,
I am going to be a college freshman next year, majoring in vocal performance as a tenor. I've been accepted into the vocal performance programs at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, SUNY Purchase College near NYC, Ithaca College in Ithaca, and Mercyhurst College in Erie. I am leaning more towards the first 3 i think, but I really have no idea if one is better than the other. Please post your opinions to help make my decision easier, thank you!

You need to think about what teacher you want to work with the most. Which school in general you life and feel most comfortable with and if money is a concern where your received the most merit aid. I will bump a thread about finding the best teacher for you.

thank you, what is your opinion of Carnegie Mellon’s program though? I had always thought that it was good, but now I am hearing mixed things about it. I know they have an excellent Musical Theater program, so I assumed so was their Vocal program.

MT & VP, while have some similarities in basic vocal training diverge from there. I am not deeply familiar with the CM VP department. I know they have a first rate theater department. The main thing you need to ask yourself is do they have a voice teacher there that you want to work with, that is an excellent technician and fits with your personality. With VP majors that is paramount, regardless of the school. Please refer to “Voice Majors - Things to Consider” thread below.

CMU had a big turnover of teachers in voice a few years ago but I have read that they are coming back from that. They do offer excellent training in acting and dance - two areas that are often overlooked in other VP programs.

Of those programs, I’d be most concerned about Purchase and that is based strictly on what I have heard and read. The way the voice department is controlled by Jacques Trussel is the subject of much controversy.
