Vocal Performance - In Need of Advice

Hi. I am a 26 year old guy, who has been going through so many trials of different majors and just haven't been able to decide over these years since high school.

In high school I was in the band and chior, including the extra things like Jazz Band, Select Choir, etc...

I absolutely LOVE singing, and am highly considering pursuing a major in Vocal Performance...

People say I'm pretty good. But... obviously I'm not professional and have lacked any sort of "training" in a sense for many years now.

My question for you is... how hard would it be to get into a well-named music school (they do auditions and such, right?). And are there any recommended schools to go to? I'm open to any... though, northeast coast would be preferred (I am from Philly, PA). :)

One thing I must emphasize is I am not looking to teach... I want to perform for a living... I want to see myself in Broadway, and other vocal-oriented things...

Thank you for any suggestions, I really hope people can give me some guidance here. I want to pursue a dream for once in my life... :)

In general these schools are VERY difficult to get into. You may want to go over to the Musical Theater section of this forum, there is a wealth of info regarding the different schools, auditon information, what to wear, song choice, monologue choice, etc. I'm sure you know that it is too late to audition for most schools, although I think that there may be a couple still accepting auditions. I'm not trying to be discouraging but there are many schools that see hundreds some over a thousand for 10 - 20 spots. My best advice for you is to Get some lessons, voice and dance and find a good acting teacher or coach. Learn about the schools and the process and if it's been a while since you've performed audition for some community theater and mabye find a church choir to sing in. Good Luck!

Not to sound too discouraging, but there are an awful lot of people with the same dream relative to the number of jobs available for singers. Pretty good is not going to get you very far, but maybe you have the potential to be a lot better than pretty good. I would suggest that you contact a professional voice teacher in your area, arrange a few private lessons and see if they feel that you have what it takes before starting in on yet another undergrad major. No matter what the verdict, it will be money well spent. With schools like Curtis, Temple and University of the Arts nearby, there must be some very good voice teachers in your area. Good luck.
