Vocal Performance Major?

I'm trying to decide what to major in, and I'm extremely interested in a Vocal Performance Major. My family wants me to major in business, however. If I was to get a 4-year degree in Vocal Performance, could I then attend graduate school and get a Master's in Business? It just seems like you would need to have majored in business to get a Master's degree in that field. Thank you so much. Any other suggestions for what I could do are appreciated!

you can definitely get an MBA degree without having an undergraduate business degree. But depending where you go to school, it may be possible to take underraduate business courses for a minor in business.

D is getting a BM in VP (MT) from NYU. She is taking a minor called the business of entertainment, media and technology. Their is an MBA track program with the same specialty.

I just read in another thread here that music majors represent the highest percentage of UG’s admitted into medical school … so maybe the same holds for business. I would think that the team-oriented experience of singing in a choir, and the persistency you would have to show as a VP major would be considered assets. Go with your muse!

You do not have to major in business as an undergrad to get an MBA. I would actually hazard a guess based on my own experience that most MBAs majored in something else as an undergrad. You may want to have some business classes as your electives, however. Look at the admission requirements for programs that might interest you and talk to them. A lot of MBA programs want you ton have work experience before you apply, however. Then grades and GMAT score count the most.

From UVA’s website:
"Although no specific undergraduate major is required for admission, coursework in accounting and statistics is highly recommended prior to matriculation. "

You might also want to look into the options of an arts administration or music management minor in considering schools, or potentially a dual degree pursuit if those aspects interest you. The administration/management paths typically will have some entry level (and beyond) coursework in business, marketing, accounting. May ease the path down the road and open a door or two to some internship opportunities within those areas. Food for thought.

At James Madison University students can pursue a Music Industry major (with an option in recording or business) with Voice as their primary instrument. Students in the MI program study with the same teachers that teach VP students, are required to present a senior recital, take the same music core courses as all music majors. I am not sure, but students may also be able to pursue dual concentrations in Music Industry and VP… worth asking if the school interests you.
