IM transferring to SJSU this fall under a music degree. I am still considering changing majors but for the time being was going to minor in business with MIS concentration. How hard would it be for me to get into a good MBA program or more specifically, a MIS program if I didnt get my undergrad in MIS. I plan to supplement some extra programming classes and stuff, but was just curious. If I did get the masters would employers turn me down for my music bachelors as well?

anyone? anyone?

Many top MBA programs expect you to have worked in business for a few years at least before grad school. Your minor sounds like a good idea, then see where your job search leads you after that.

To get into an MIS program you’ll need at least some basic programming/database experience.

And if that’s what you want to do then I suggest changing majors. Music is a great hobby and a terrible college major. You can major in music the rest of your life if you want to, but make college a stepping point to a good job and career.

I guess deshi88 is a girl–that’s why she majored in music. Am I right?

As for your question, I think that it will be hard for you to get into a good MBA program, for you probably do not have a relevant working experience that is somehow related to business.

I don’t see why a MS in MIS would require programming/database experience for admission. If one does not have any such experience, they will probably simply require you to do some prerequisite courses after admission.

Most of us don’t know anything about MS programs in MIS. You should just google them and see what the websites of various programs say. Look at the student profiles too and see how you stack up.

Ask yourself this, why are you planning on doing an MBA in the first place?

^ that is a good question. Honestly im trying to position myself for a lucrative career I could enjoy. Ive invested so much time in music that I am not sure what else I want to do besides that. I noticed lots of MBA programs want students with clear goals and mindsets prior to going into the program. I would like to combine music and business (not in the form of a music business degree, because that is useless) But perhaps in some technology aspect. Hence the MIS, I could get employed with any business. I am going to switch, but it took a long hard look to see that I needed to. But I do not have a clear plan, and have heard mixed things about MBA’s.

Tosh-a good music major spends more time on his major than anyone else in college, guaranteed. Most of my classmates practice on average 5 to 6 hours per day, and up to 8-10 on weekends and summer breaks. I am a guy, and I have a passion. You sound close minded.

I checked out some programs for MIS in grad school. UC Berkley has one and had a diverse class profile. Some social science majors, but no art majors. They said a major in MIS wasnt required but that a proficiency test in Java and C++ was required as well as basic office apps.

I am considering MIS or engineering. If I did engineering I was thinking of industrial or electrical. Which would be a better opportunity to have a more diverse and lucrative career track?

You invested a lot in music? You are a still a kid, there are plenty of paths you can take.
