Vocal Performance: Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Lawrence or U of Miami?

We are desperate for help deciding! My D wants a college/university setting and an option to pursue a double major or degree in English or communications. We don't qualify for financial aid but will consider the scholarship offerings especially in today's economy. She is accepted at the following:

Northwestern - Bienen (scholarship to arrive soon if any)
Vanderbilt - Blair (some scholarship)
Lawrence Conservatory (nice scholarship)
U of Miami -Frost (very generous scholarship)
University of Wisconsin (generous scholarship)
There are fine teachers that she has met and would feel comfortable working with at all of these schools.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Wisconsin is a very good music school with a fine voice department. Northwestern is an excellent school, stronger academically. When comparing financials, do not forget to include logistical issues…transporting her to each and getting her home, and check what the housing situation will be at each later in her undergraduate program. At many larger state schools, on campus housing is not available to upperclassmen. Good luck.

Also, check the possibility of double-major or double-degree (not the same thing, see below) at all of those schools and if you can do it in 4 yrs vs 5 years (so get the total cost, not just the annual!!). Northwestern does have double-degree and double-major between the CAS and the music school. Double-degree takes 5 years while double-major normally takes 4 years (according to their student handbook but you may want further verification). The difference is double-major gives you just one degree, BM, with 2 majors. You can also do it the other way around–get a BA degree from WCAS instead with music as your second major. Double-degree, on the other hand, gives you both the BA and BM.

Operadreamer,

My Daughter is a freshman Vocal Performance major at Northwestern. She absolutely loves is there. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

operadreamer I applied to Frost and did not hear from them yet, when did you receive your letter?

pku – my daughter heard about two weeks ago. Good luck!

PKU- Call Frost! The notifications went out 2 weeks ago along with the FA awards>

The voice department at Northwestern has a professor for every one. I’m currently studying voice with Bruce Hall. If you want to have a direct conversation/if you have questions, feel free to contact me!

There are also opportunities for academic minors at some schools that can be done within a 4 year time frame and at no extra expense.
