My daughter has completed her the first year of a mm program at University of Miami Frost School of music, but met a great vocal teacher who is trying to convince her to transfer to Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. Does anyone know anything about this program ?

You need to bring this question here [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums)

(I saw this thread in the Search and Selection Forum, and requested it be moved here)

This is the extent of historical info here:

From an instrumental standpoint, many of the faculty are top notch. I don’t know enough about vocal instructors to comment.

A couple of concerns might be overall peer quality, and depth of program.

Another might be the fact that she appears to have been “recruited” while actively seeking a degree at another institution, potentially a violation of “good practices” of a couple of bodies, most notably the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of College Admissions Counseling. Brooklyn Conservatory If your daughter initiated the conversation, this would not apply.

Thanks. She actually attends the University of Miami and was up in NY this summer for a program at Manhattan School of Music, and one the faculty members told her she needs to go to Brooklyn College because it is supposed to have a good vocal program and alot less expensive than Manhattan. I have been reading very mixed reviews of the school and she is debating to leave the program at UM for Brooklyn, based on this vocal teacher.

The Frost school is considered to be very good. Does she have a good teacher?

The problem is that she feels there aren’t any really good voice teachers at the Frost School of Music. She had a teacher last year who was a former Met performer, but she wasn’t the very best teacher, and she left after one year. She does have an excellent private teacher here, but she was swayed by this teacher at MSM to transfer to Brooklyn, where she also teaches voice.

You might want to post this question over in the New Forum for Classic Singers. You might get some specific info on this particular teacher.

It is unprofessional behavior to proselytize a student away from their current teacher. It is one thing for a singer to go in search of other teachers. It is quite another thing for any teacher to tell a singer they need to leave where they are and follow them to XYZ. Beware!
