Voice Lesson Time at Schools

We are discovering that each school is different in it’s approach to private lessons, from the amount of time to the rep during the lessons. Are there any parents that would share what they know about the time for lessons at your kids’ schools? 30 min, 45 min or an hour. Any thoughts would be helpful.

An hour private at Coastal Carolina once a week. Plus a 50 min class with your voice studio and a 50 min recital class each once a week.

At Western Michigan you get a one hour lesson each week with a full-time MT Voice Faculty member, you have the opportunity to sing in at least one or two recitals in front of the assembled MT faculty and students each semester, and you have formal vocal juries at the end of each semester in front of the faculty.

At the beginning of each semester, each student has to develop a set of songs to work on with their voice teacher that meet specific criteria, such as, “a classical/art song, a pure pop belt number, a belt/mix from recent Broadway, and a legit soprano song from the Golden Age.” I believe the criteria varies from semester to semester. The juries follow a professional audition format where you have to prepare two songs from your rep for that semester to use for simulated auditions for specifically designated shows, such as, “pick a song from your rep to use for an audition for The Scarlet Pimpernel and a song to use for an audition for On the Town.”

During the first semester students do not have private lessons, but, instead, they take a group voice course wherein they are evaluated for placement with one of the voice faculty. Students also sing in MT studio courses that are included in the curriculum beginning in the Sophomore year.

At Utah, you sing for the faculty and are placed freshman year. Must stay with the same full time faculty through sophomore year and then you can choose to change to another prof for your final two years (most do not switch). One hour private lessons. Each year requires something different in terms of genre and number of pieces but one classical is required through junior year. Dem labs every Friday (all 4 years) and jury songs are presented in a rotation through all classes during the year (also filmed purely for instructional purposes). If you are not cast in a show, you are automatically a member of the musical theatre chorus and sing with them several times a week as a group. Senior year first semester are your last juries. Final semester is a recital and a senior show.

Faculty are also available for additional private lessons at a reduced private rate.

And 30 minute musical theatre rep private lessons junior and senior year on top of that! I miss singing that much, jeez.

Thanks @AlexaMT! I didn’t know that! More stuff to look forward to!

Thought I would revive this conversation for folks trying to make decisions.

I’m curious about Webster. I can’t tell about the amount of voice lessons per week. Does anyone know?

At CAP21/Molloy all students get one hour of private voice lessons per week, for all eight semesters. This is in addition to group voice classes.

Same as @CentralOHmomof4 for BW; plus voice classes and mandatory choir!

This is the description of the weekly voice lessons from Hartt:

Applied Voice meets once a week for eight semesters in a fifty-minute, one-on-one private voice lesson format. The first section of the class is devoted to vocal warm-ups and technique development using specific exercises for healthy voice building. The balance of the class is devoted to mastering repertoire suited to the student, and to exploring and preparing songs for juries and auditions

Musical Theatre students are also required to be in the Musical Theatre Chorus the entire four years as well which was an aspect of the program that my daughter really loved as well.

At OCU you have 2 hrs of applied voice each week which consists of both private voice technique and private coaching lessons (rep and presentation). Your voice teacher and your coach are two different teachers, two different lessons. In addition, you will meet weekly with your voice studio (group class - this is also with your voice technique teacher) - and mandatory choir or other voice ensemble which meets daily, all semesters, all four years. Then there are also specialty classes that you have various semesters such as MT Workshop. Voice juries are held every semester. Additionally, you are required to present a junior recital (1/2 hour) of classical repertoire and a senior recital (1 hour) of musical theatre rep as part of your degree.

At Hartt they have 50 minute private voice lesson weekly all 4 years, an additional 30 min. of Vocal Coaching (repertoire, acting the song and technique practice with another teacher) weekly beginning in Year 2, and a 2 hour Vocal Studio Master Class weekly. In addition to solo voice training, they have a class (not sure how long it is) weekly called MTCL - stands for Music Theater Chorus Lab, which focuses on the study of ensemble singing and acting. There is no additional charge for accompaniment for your lesson or coaching.
