Does anyone have any input on vocal performance / voice majors at Northwestern, Rice, Yale, Michigan and Furman? Good schools with good music programs; would their programs allow a student to balance artistic commitment with academic interests?

My D is a vocal performance major at Rice (soph). It is a very demanding program, but you have access to the great academics at Rice, too. They only accept a couple of kids a year (by audition). There are lots of performance opps for non-music majors, too. D's boyfriend is in two choirs and in some light opera performances and he is a biology major. PM me if you want more info. Rice is awesome.

At the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, a voice student can get a Bachelor of Music BM degree or a Bachelor of Arts/Science BA/BS. The BM students take 80-90% of the courses at Eastman while the BA/BS students take 40-60% of their classes at Eastman and the rest at the U of Rochester's other colleges. It is even possible to get a dual BM and BA degree in, for example, music and physics. Maybe the colleges you named have something similar.

I should clarify regarding my list - at Yale, the academic climate is obviously rich. Would it offer vocal performance majors a similar degree of artistic depth as the others?

As far as I know, Yale dropped it's performance program awhile ago. However, one could still take advantage of the great program they have there.

ods is right. There is no performance major for undergrads at Yale. Students can pursue a BA in music, but not performance.
