I apologize if this is the wrong forum or if it has been discussed at length; I searched but couldn’t find much info.
We are just beginning to think about and learn about colleges (my twins will be sophomores). My daughter is a serious singer (classical and musical theater) and a fine actress. She does not want to major in music or theater, but she doesn’t want to have to give them up completely, either. What schools offer vocal instruction and good performance opportunities for students who are not music or theater majors? Based on her history so far, she is likely to have a shot at even the most selective schools, and she wants a challenging academic climate. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!!
How about Yale? There are no performance majors at all, but lots of opportunities for undergrads. Although instruction is mainly with grad students. Vassar. Williams. Swarthmore. Princeton. Wesleyan. Bard. All schools known for good music programs for undergrads, and no performance degrees (Bard doesn’t offer voice in the conservatory - only in the college.) In other words - look for academic fit and other intangibles at schools which do not offer a BM in performance, then check out the adjunct professors for voice, and the available ensembles. For musical theater, or straight drama, you’ll need to check whether productions are limited to majors or not. I know less about that world - you should post your question on the Musical Theater Forum. And some of the more academic schools may not even produce musical theater as part of the curriculum - you’ll need to check on that, as well.
Thank you, that is very helpful guidance. Much appreciated.
